DEATH OF JAPANESE PREMIER
WILL IT LEAD TO FASCIST
MOVEMENT?
NEW MINISTERS APPOINTED
(THROUGH REUTER'S AGENCY.]
Toxro, May 10. Walle yesterday's outrages may be regarded as symptomatic of the prevailing political, social, and economic dissatisfaction, It seums reasonably certain that the perpetrators lack any backing and sympathy from responsible quarters or from the country at large. On the other hand the actions have been strongly denounc ed everywhere. The exlating conditions, it is,, trua, have been increasingly criticised, hence the rapid growth of the Fascist-like movement in recent months but, advocates of violence and direct. action are belloved to be numerically infinitexfinal.
It is noteworthy that except for the dastardly assassination of the Premier, yesterday's' outrages were comparativaly trivial and somewhat puarile, and appear to hays been mainly in the nature. of demonstrations.
Moreover, reports indicate that peace and quiet continue to prevail throughout the country including Tokyo where to all up. pearances work and play are continuing normally,
TOKYO, May 16,
Mr. Tsuyoshi Inukai, seventy-year-old Prime Minister of Japan, who was shot down in cold blood last night, daring his youthful assailants to shoot, has succumbed to his wounds..
Very little hope had been held out for his life, though no effort, was spared. Blood transfusions were carried out and the Premier returned to consciousness, but the shock was too great and he died at 11.35 p.m.
Immediato, stops were taken to ensure the 'carrying-on of the Government. Air. Kisaburo Suzuki,, the. Home Minister, was selected to act as Premier, but it was later: "decided that Mr. Takahashi, the Finance Minister, should assume the acting Premiership and be was formally installed by the Emperor at å special ceremony at the Imperiál · Palace held at two o'clock this morning, soon after the announcement of Mr. ́Inukal's, death. »
Following final urgent mesting, the Cabinst tendered theis resignation en bios, Mr, Takahashi proceeding, to the Palace with the resignation.
ORDER TO CONTINUE OFFICE
Temporarily declining to accept this, the Emperor ordered Mr. Takahashi to continue office pending consultation with the - Throne's advisers regarding a successor. to Innkal Meanwhile
the aged Senro Saionji has been summoned to Tokyo to attend a Conference."
The Military Council has decided to appoint Lieut-General Jiuzaburo Masaki, present Vice-Chiet of the General Staff, to succeed. General Arakas War Minister, whether the Cabinet agrees. to withdraw their resignations of Hot! It is reported that General Araki himself narrowly missed assassination as a party. of six, armed with revolvers, visited – kis residence shortly after mid-night and threatened the household, but the General was absent, attending a Cabinet Conference.
TOKYO, May 10
Although the Seiyukai are hopeful that Prince Saionji will advise the Emperor to command Mr. Takahashi to form a new Selyukai Cabinet, it is generally belloved that either a coalition or a super party Cabinet is more likely.
Serious internal disacasion in the ranks, of the Selyukal, is... arousing speculation ar to who will succeed Mr. Inakal in the presidency of the party as It will virtually be impossible for the Seiyukai to continue in power if there is a split, over the presi descy.
INSPIRED FROM SHANGHAI?
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
SHANGHAI, May 15. The impression prevails in well informed Japanese circles, in Shanghai that the assassination of Mr. Itukaj was, probably, a desperata gesture to compei Tokyo to keep the remainder of the troops still at, Shanghai. The move is not considered likely to succeed.
CHINA'S CONDOLENCES
NANHING, May lê.
Upon learning news of the attack. on Mr. Inakai, the Chinese Government sent a message of sympathy, but later, on receiving an officipi cablegram from the Chinese Legation "in Tokyo, the message was charged from one of sympathy to one of condolence. Three messages were sent, one from the Nationalist Government, one from Lo Wen Kan, Foreign Minister in Nanking, and the third from Wang Ching Wei, Chairman of the Executive Yuan, all the messages being despatched this afternoon,

GRAVE APPREHENSION FOR FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS
TENOUGH, REUTER'E AGENCY.]
NINKING, May 16. In commenting upon the dastard- ly attack on Mr Iankai, the | Central Daily Wawa, the Official organ of the Nanking Government in a leading article expressed grave apprehension for the future deve lopraent of Sino-Japanese relations. A Chinese paper first drew atten- tion to the growth of general unrest in Japan in recent years, as was I evidenced by the assassination of the ex-Japanese Premier Hamagu- chi, and the recent attack on Japanese financial leaders. The paper went on to say that it was apparent that politi oal movements lay behind the anrest. This unrest culminated in a crisis by last night's attack on of the tragedy must be considerable not only for Japan, but also for China and the world.
