SHIPS WHICH WORK FOR HUMANITY.
WHAT THE SURVEYING VESSEL SERVICE DOES.
The tramendous toll of the Bri- tish Surveying Vessel Service is re called by the laying up of the sur veying shipa for the winter, writes thu naval correspondent of the Morning Post. H.M.S. Beaufort is one of wight survbying ships that have been on active surveying scr | vico" during the summer months, The roduction Lo winter comple..
ment implies that the surveying afluers and their assistanta go ashuro to,, embody the work of the summer months in those chartai and hydrographib publications which, in the coming years will be in constent
10 by the ships of all nations.

It is difficult to convey in a few sentonces the extent of the toil. through which these sight vessels have passed during the past months, Soundings alone aro gigantic Inhour when it is appre ciated that each of the four shipa woruad have made 4 charta, each of which charts contains about 35,000 soundings. In shallow water ouch sounding is made by hand with a load-line from an open bent -a weary task under tropical suns nad often in torrential downpoura,
This summer has been one
oh Brent activity. Of the four vessela in Home Waters, HMS. Flinders .. has been at work on the Went Coast of England more particularly at Padstow, where the approaches and harbour have been re-survey": od

H... Kellet, working in the Thames Estuary, has been hard at work sweeping for wrecks, of which Jabout a dozen have been located and accurately "Axed.." Those wrecks, and the depth of water over them, will be on next year's charts in their exact positions.
"Hole" in the North Sea, Perhaps the
interesting work, Lowever, has fallen to H.M. S. Fitzroy which has located, fixed.. and accurately Tharted a 100-FB- thom hole in the middle of the North Sea. This hole lies in a ro gion where the soundings are 40 fathoms, and its existence has often been reported in the past but has, until this summer, been unverified. foreign stations, H.M.S. Ormonde Of the four surveying vessels: on
has surveyed the steamer channel in the Persian Gulf from the en trange of the Gulf to the mouth, of the Great River-the River Euph- raton. She has also been engaged off Cyprus.
H.M.S. Endeavour has surveyed the broiling and désolate coast of the Sudan, ja the Red Sea, and later the new harbour of Haifa, on the coast of Palestine, where the new harbour in connection with the British section of the Now Pipe Line from the Anglo-Persion Oil Wella teaches the sea. HMS: Iroquois has been busy in the Straits of Malacca, and F.M.8. Herald off the romantic country of Sarawak,
Between 15 and 100 fathome the new echo-sounding apparatus i used; but from 130 fathoms to 5,000 fathoms soundings have to be made with the Lucas machine. A sound- ing of 4,000 fathoms, that is to say of 4 miles, takes 4. hours to com plete. The piano wire used for the sounding has one splice only in this great lengt
H.M.S. Iroquois returns home in January, and it is understood that her officers will transfer to the new surveying vessel H.M.S. Challenger, which was designed for the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, but which has been taken over by the Admiralty.
This vessel is equipped with all the latest devices and will come- mence, her life next spring in the Shotlands. She has the phenomen al radius of action of 9,000 miles, which foreshadows many a long and adventurous voyage in northern water far from fuelling bases of any kind. At the forthcoming Dis- ammament Conference of one thing' we can be sure. The vessels of the British surveying vessel service will not be dirarmed, for their work for the good of humanity no one, dis- putes:
