gard when the process of reuiova. began will teassemble at the Me- chanical Training Establishment, Chatham.

In making this change the Ad miralty are pursuing the policy dl the past 25 years. 1 has been prayed that oth ships, though pic. turesque and cheap, afford cramp ed and insanitary quarters for per Sonnel under training. Therefore, the many hulks with which every, naval port used to be crowded have been gradually discarded, till to-day but fow remain

·Britania, 84, Vincent, Vernon. Indus, Ganges and Impregnable are won which have vanished with in living memory.

Failed as a Fighting ship. Probably the Fisgard would have gone sooner, but the difficulty i accommodating a large number of boys at Chatham had to be ever cone. This has 11111 done, by adapting the discused Detention Quarters, close to the RN. Bag- racks.

Of the four hulks which made up. the Pisgard establishment, three aer to be sold or converted to other purposes. Perhaps the least known of them is the Fisgurd 14 original- ly the 11,000-ton cruiser Spartiate, dating from 1808. Armed with no gun bigger than a sin, without, side armour, she was a failura as abighting ship, and did very little sed 'sorvica:

Fisgard II. was a far more nol- able vessel. Launched in 1887 and completed in the following year, the Horeules, to use her original! name, was once the most powerful ironclad afont. She was the second ship designed by Sir Edward Reed after he benime Chief Constructor of the Navy, and was considered chia masterpiece,

On a displacéinent of 2,880 tons, she carried the heavy armamens for those days of eight 10in 18-ton and Jonders, two Din. 12-ton muzzle besides smaller guns, Her cost, both hull and machinery, was £361, 13 mere rifle compared with the £4,000,000 expended on the Ger. man 10,000-ton pocket battleship Deutschland. She was a mest suc cessful ship, flying the Angs of varius well-known admiraly dur ing her active career.

The Terrible. Fisgard III was the 14,200-ton cruiser Terrible, launched in 18. Though by no means such a success as the Hercules, she "was better known to the public.

She and her sister, the Powerful, until recently at hulk at Devon port, were built as replies to the
