Pleas of guilty to charges of murder are uncommon in Eng. land, the last case being in February, 1923.

One of the most interesting calen of recent years in which a aen- tence of death has been carried out fcllowing plea of guilty was that of Joseph Clarke, 21, for the murder of Mrs., Aline Fontaine, a Liverpool widow. Curiously enough, Mr. Justice Fighy was the judge-as in the case at Manchester nasizos-and on that occasion also he solemu- ly warned the prisoner that only one sentence could follow his plea.

There was niso an acceptance of a plea of guilty in the case of James Frederick Stratton, charged at the Old Bailey several years ago with murder- ing his sweetheart. The trial Inated six minutes.
