Needs of the Colony,

It shows" a wonderful record of progress, reflecting the greatest credit on the various committees 'who have hail, the management of this hospital. In erecting thear warda which it is my privilege to open today, the committee has she wat wise appreciation of the needs of the Colony. I am glad that Mr. Ngan, who four years ago was so anxious far such wards to be built has now the pleasure of seeing them, completed during his term of office as chairman,

Bpontaneous Effort. These hospitals owe their incep; tion entirely to spontaneous and purely Chinese effort, and have done an immerse amount of good work in this Colony, for which the Government and the Chinese people ure most grateful. I congratulate Mr. Ngan Shingkwan and his dire tors on the excellent record of work which they have achieved this year, the first under combined manage ment. They hand over their trust with many improvements added, but feel sure that the incoming chair mon and his directors will maintain the high standard set up. I have ash pleasure in declaring the new

wards open.

ST. GEORGE'S BALT CANCELLED.

Widespread cancellation of social functions has resulted from the advice repeatedly offered by medical men, that crowds should be avoided at all costs. The most prominent of the affairs to be cancelled is the St. George's Ball, which was to have taken place on January 6. In addition the usual Watch-night" Service at St. John's Cathedral, listed to begin at 11.20 to-night, and the New Year Kally organised by the Cathedral at the Theatre Royal for Sindig evening, will not take place, while the New Year's Eve Carnival at Lane, Crawford's Rew taurant has been abandoned. These are in addition to the list of can- cellations published in yesterday's issue of the Daily Pres. In that issus, however, we inadvertantly stated that the Polier Recreation Club Christmas Tree Party, to se held on January 1, was among the functions to be postponed. We are now informed that it will take place as arranged, and cancellation is not incontemplated.

Dr. Kciewall, who spoke Chinese, said: About, a week age His Excellency the Gover nor presided at the annual meeting of the Boy Scouts Association, when
