HENRY HEATH
The wide business founded on "Henry Heath"... hats is both evidence and guarantee of their quality. As regards shape, it need only be said that "Henry Heath" hats have withstood the keen, critical judgment of men for many successive seasons, and have played no small part in the establishment of the hat fashions of the past decade.

DAILY FRESS;"]-
SIR,I have read your leader in this morning's paper with great interest and as the subject is one that affects the interests of a large number of people it is only right that some public comment, be raised
As you stated, the system of close ing the "red light" houses has been tried in' many cities in America and Europa and the affects have been more, or less observed. Many commissions have studied the effects and the cause of the " oldest profession in the world?" What have bean the result of the closing of the houses As far as any one can ace, and one that is bound to come to Hong Kong, the vice has only moved from the poorer sections of the pities to the wealthy districta. Disonse starts on the upward trend and the murals of the younger people of the communities have been lowered. Do we want this to hap. pen bera in Hong Kong?
An omminent doctor in one of the larger cities where the experi ment has been tried stated that the percentage of venereni, disease had been trebbled in six montka since the closing of the districts. He further stated that now, eight out of every ten men that are seen on the streets of the city have either had or have one form or another of the many diseases. Doesn't that speak for itself?

It is a terrible fact that any of the womanhood of the nation must be sacrificed, but I, like many | others, would rather see some of the poorer wameh perform these duties than see my sister or sweetheart in the samo position. The vice can never be stamped out. A long as there are men and women who are ready to support it the "profes sin" will flourish. It matters not what form the vice is called, licenced houses or sly brothels, it is still prostitution and much boster under proper government control. ... OBSERVER. "Observer's "ethics are decided- ly shaky and his "facts have been controverted by careful. in- vestigators. State control does not increase disease that is tho goneral experience in Europe and din Amerien. It is an odd idea that vice haunts the poorer, districts of towns, shades of the West End-- and our own West Point! As to the ethics, it is really inexcusable to suggest that "other people's" daughters and sweethearts should be sacrificed. And it is such a
·dangerous notion, for the "ancient profession draws recruits indis- eriminately from all classes, One of his own relatives may be the next vietim Immoral men and women exist, and will in any ense find each other, but state "control" creates an interest that benefits from the in-
crease of vice, steals the evenings of The women, thus keeping them in economic slavery, without hope of escaps.-ED. H.K.D.P.J

More. over, I did try to show him that their conduct be as opinionastre, na if a player of skittles should in publique reprove another for that he did play tennis and did forbear to come to the alleya. And this, I am of an opinion, did convince him he had mistaken the import of my argument had we parted mighty

And.This day to the Peninsula Hotel to a reception given by Sir Robert Ho Tung upon his Golden Wedding. There I and many hun- dred guests and the great rooms most proper in decoration. As home the Pound Sterling touches the lowest, level, but I doubt not it shall recover inter though not completely these many months. More duties at home and notably upon household lane and I perceive that I was wise when I sent not tea-cloths as a present for Christmas to mine acquaintance, But much it irks me that the Master of His Majesty's Postes here doth demand one hundred per centum ad valorem to be deposited against the payment of duties upon silk. But when I spoke with him of it, he did remark in cryptic fashion that whoever should hold the dogge, it should not be him. "And"
