The best letter received for the fat competition was written by W. H. Ray, B.RA, of H.M.S. Par thian, to whom a cheque for $10 has been sent. His letter runs: Dear Sir,

Dear Sir,

I enclose herewith cutting of: advertisement on "White Label" Dewar Whisky appearing in to- day's issue of the Daily Press and consider it the best for the follow

·I, profer the advertisement of the Gas Company (cutting enclosed)... First of all it estelses the eye. The dark interior of the illustrang reasons: tion against the white space-sur- rounding gives the announcement great prominence.

Second, the lay out is well done and is neat and dignified, The typography is excellons. The sizes of the various types are well select-- ed, done of them "being above 24 point, which is about the largest type the eye can. take in for an advertisement of this size..

The illustration gives the human, and very homely touch. A look of cleanliness, comfort and warmth about the room convey the very sell- ing points that a gua fire is noted for.

The reasons do not cover too many Enes of print. Four lines of suli- dued type convey the

2. It holds something good. 3. The descriptive sentences, although not typographically con spienons, capture the imagination and sorely by one's desire to taste this unquenchable elixir.

I have given these reasons with- out bias and trust that there is no"

suggestion of jocularity in this letter to debar it from your com petition.

phase, and the clear, beautiful air easily read type leads the interest on to the reading matter. Ones tuste is not offended by attempts to, catch the eye through flashy pic-.. tures and crude lettering. The ad- vertisement is appended with a good illustration of the package, en- abling prospective customers to re- cognise it unmistakably when pur chasing, and, in addition, the bume of the article is clearly set out.

This advertisement was chosen by the writer of the best letter.

The whole article will appeal to those who are none too well off, to whom the subjects of economy and iabour saving are most important. Truly, an advertisement showing great care and reason together with good technicology.

KOBZA STUDIO.

SI,--For the following reasons I consider the advertisement of Kobza Studio the bost

(1) Attractiveness. No one can look at the page without being attracted to this unique advertise- ment.

(2) Ilustration-without which an advertisement is like a dark room without a window,

(3) Layout. The advertisemedit is not too crowded and the white space with the black spots make it stand out on the page..

(4) Wording. It is so cleverly worded that anyone saturally reads it through.

(5) Child's Picture. Nearly everyone is human enough to be. favourably impressed by the pic- tare of an attractive child.

(6) Clear Address, Any strang- ecoming to Hong Kong, can easily find the photos on exhibi- tion or phone for an appoint. ment,

Yours faithfully,

E.E.S.

SUMMIT DRESS SHIRTS,

ADVERTISER--MACKINTOSH'S LIMITED.

Dear Sir,

Of all the advertisements which have appeared in your valuable newspaper between the dates of November 23 and 25, the attached is, in my opinion, the best "copy" so far turned out!

(1) The size of the advertise-

ment which is fairly large is the most suitable one adopted for a display advertisement, unlike some others of such a small size that you sometimes fail to notice their presence.

(3) The text is appropriate and comprehensive, just a fad. lines explaining the usefulness of the Summit Dress Shirt. In this connection the psychology of the readers must be considered by the į advertisers, as the businessmen's available time is limited, the wording should be effective and ts the point, just call a spado » space, and that is enough.

(a) The types (all Roman) are neat and well-selected. We, some- times observe there are five or six different types all mixed up in a single advertisement which is in- deed an eyesore.

(4) The lay-out is well-set, plus an illustration which is amusing ́aud'entebes the eye at once. It shows what the gooda proffered on sala are for, and last, but not least, the advertisement is placed in a prominent position, on the top of a page and alongside read- ing matter, for when the reader goes through the news column he will at the same time. read, the advertisement.
