POLITICAL circles are astounded by the unprecedented political landslide disclosed by the

first day's results,

Conservatives are overjoyed, while Labourites are naturally most disappointed. As tonight's results are chiefly those of boroughs or urban constituencies and include a large number of Industrial centres, where the Labour vote was pormally strong, and the three hundred odd results which will be declared to-morrow will cover county constituencies which are normally predominantly Conservative, the Conservatives anticipate even a more decisive victory in the second day's results. If so the Labour Party will be practically wiped out as an effective Opposition in the House of Commons and they may even find themselves with less than a hundred supporters in the new Parliament.

The Conservatives require only another ninety seats to have a clear majority over all other parties and there seems every prospect "that, the Conservative strength in the new Parlia ment will be over 400,

Liberals and National Labour combined may total nearly a hundred and the National Government may find itself with a majority of over four hundreds.

The unprecedented rout of Labourites and the enormous majorities by Government can- didates continues. Both sides are amazed at the completeness of the victory,

The overwhelming' successes of last night have been strengthened by numerous Labour defeats today in rural and semi-rural areas. Conservatives defeating not only the Labourites. but also Liberals where they were standing, thus shewing à decisive swing towards tarifs.

A reconstruction of the Cabinet is probable by Mr. Ramity MacDonald alter consulta-

tions with Mr. Baldwin, Sir Herbert Samuel and other leaders.

Mr. MacDonald is expected to see. H.M. the King to-morrow,

The new Cabinet is likely to be larger than the present one of ten, and Special Com

mittees of Cabinet Ministers will be appointed to study specific problems.

There will be diacnity in seating the buge total of Government members in the. House

of Commons, while the Opposition is likely only to fill two benches. !

There were sharp rises of two...points In Government Stocks, while Industrials and Rail- ways are soaring in anticipation of tariffa.

AMERICA PERTURBED.

FRENCH OPINION.
