RESISTANCE TO CORROSION.

· INFLUENCE OF OXIDE FILMS

There are a number of industrial metals, including stainless steel and alúminium, which, by reason of in, visible films of permanent oxides formed on their surfaces, offer con siderable resistance" to torrosion. The study of these films is an im portant factor in the solution of the problem of protection from ̈eor-. rosion, and was the subject of a lecture delivered by "Mr. Ulick Evans at the meeting of the In- stitute of Metals, heli at Zurich,

These oxide films, which are usually too thin to give interference tints are invisible in contact with the metal, but become visible, when removed from it. Though the films produced by air alone offer -some- protection, stability can be increas ed, Mr. Evans states, by special, treatment with oxidising agents. The thin films producing the tem- per calours on fron are usually non- protective as they have a tendency

to crack.

These thin films can frequently be removed from the metal and trans ferred, to glass or cellophane, and the Alma responsible for temper Ecolours retain these effects even after removal to the transparent support to the case of aluminium; the metal is removable by hydro chloric acid vapour, while for iron, iodige or anodic treatment in a chloride or sulphate solution serves the same end.

Weak Spots, Additions to metals which pass into the solid solution form usually increase the resistance, while thosc which provide a second phase diminish the resistance to corrosion.

Further, most natural oxide films are not wholly impervious to ions; in other words, they have their weak spots. They may nevertheless possess healing properties due to
