MR EW SOMERVAIL PASSES AWAY.A{

The death occurred, at the Peak Hospital on Saturday of Mr. H. Wardiny Somervail, of Callender's Cable and Construction Compány,

The nown of Mr. Somervail's de- miso came as shock to his fanny friends in Hong Kong. He was taken ill on Wednesday, and died, at five o'clock on Saturday 'dfter-"

Mr Somervail onme to Hong Kong about a year ago for Callen- der's Cable and Construction Com- pany to tako charge of the erection of the 22.000 volt trähsmission line in the Now Territories. He was 1 Sears of age

A particularly and aspect of his death is the fact that ho was en- gaged to be married and waŋ duo to sail for home on the Rajputana which left Hong Kong on Saturday.

FUNERAL.

The funeral took place yesterday. the deceased boing, interred in Happy Valley cemetery. The ser vico, at which the Rev. E. G. Powell officiated, was held in the cemetery church owing to the inclement wheather

Many friends and colleagues of the late Mr. Somervail attended the service and followed the corlegs in the pouring rain to the graveside.

HOSPITALS' APPEAL FOR

HELP.

TUNG WAH AND NETHERSOLE.

Owing to the increased cost of maintenance, caused through the low exchange rates, the committee of the Tung Wah Hospital are making an appeal through the Chamber of Commerce to the vari- ous business houses in the colony for subscribtions towards their in stitutions, the Tung Wah, the Eastern Branch, and the Kwong Wah Hospitals.

STRANGE ATTEMPT AT SUICIDE.

TRAGIC STORY

OF A LEPER,

[An="extremely novel aftempt ab suicide occurred at Canton a day or. so ago when Soo Yau, at one time employed at a rops factory, decid. ed to end his life by Placing him- self full length on his back in, the middle of a road and waiting for any approaching vehicle to run

over him.

The incident occurred at Yuet Sou Maloo, near the Cunton. Kowloon Railway Station, at n time when the traffic using the road is at its busfest. The drivers of passing vehicles decided that they would not bigo Suo Yau, who was handed over to the pilice. It was discovered that he is a leper from a distant province. Owing to the fact that he had contracted the disease be had been cast out by his family and for some time past has led a vagrant. life. Ou arriving at Canton he applied to a relative for aid, but as this was not forthcoming he decided that the best way out of his troubles was suicide. The police at Canton, more humane than the relatives, are arranging to have the unfor tunate man placed in a taper hoe-· pital:
