LATEST DETAILS OF SATURDAY'S TYPHOON: LITTLE DAMAGE DONE.
The first typhoon of the season visited the Colony on Aaturday when a blow of comparatively short duration but high velocity. was experienced. It provided the Colony with all the thrills of a typhoon, but fortunately did not bring much havoc in its train,
Thanks to the Observatory keeping the Colony well advised of the direction and proximity of the typhoon, the damage both or shore and afloat was negligible, Native craft, on the first in- dication of the possibility of a typhinon huddled into the shelters. in Hong Kong and Kowloon on Friday, while the river steamere left their wharves and went for shelter. Bigger vessels in the Harbour went to Kowloon Bay for shelter and in fact by Friday night, preparations were complete for the coming visit of the
blow."
In spite of this however, trouble was experienced by the Java Lijn steamer Tjimanook which, broke anchor and drifted from the Harbour in the direction of Canton. The vessel was eventually anchored at a spot called Peang Chan. The s.a. Washung also drifted and eventually grounded at Stonecutters.

This signal, by the way, means that the wind force is expected to incroase.
Shortly after the hoisting of No. 9, the typhoon appeared to have changed its course and to be heading in a more direct line to wards the Colony. By 11.20 am. it was here and the last signal, ac- companied by the three warning bomba, was hoisted.
With the hoisting of No. 9 signal, the city from service was suspended but the Star Ferry tried bravely to carry on. The Solar Star, exi perionoed great difficulty in trying to tie up at the Hong Kong side shortly before eleven o'clock and after being mercilessly and dan, gerously tossed about near the ferry pier, decided to abandon the voyage and to return to Kowloon. Thenceforward the ferry service Was suspended and was not reauin- ed again until little after 3.30 .m. when the wind had calmed down considerably.
Record Squall Velocity. According to a report issued by the Observatory yesterday the velocity of the wind at 11.47 a.m. was 79 miles per hour when a squall at the rate of. 136 miles per hour occurred (from North to East) the greatest aquall velocity ever record ed at the Observatory.
