Tho accused officer, Lieut.-Comdr. Joseph Reid, is formally charged with "acts calculated to prejudico good order and naval discipline," and with committing thefts.

The Allegations. The Chinese midshipman, Chang,' who is serving on the Ramillies, was bathing, the inpector said, when Commander Reid was obser. ved tampering with his pockets.

The inspector said he emerged from his cupboard and confronted Commander Reid after showing his identity card. He said he found a

"The witnesses also upheld the contention of the defence that the holes bored in the cupboard had been tampered with and consider ably enlarged since June 18, on which date the police inspector is alleged to have espied Commander Rrid taking the money belonging to the Chinese midshipman, Chang, The witnesses maintained that when they examined the holes shortly after June 19 it was not possible to see clearly through them, while later they had been widened, enabling & good view to be obtain ed.

Promoted from Lower Deak, Lieut.-Commander Reid was pro- moted from the lower deck during the war, his seniority as mate being dated June, 1018, He became a lieutenant in December, 1021, and was advanced to his present rank right years later. He has been serving in the battleship Ramillies on the Mediterranean station since the beginning of January, 1031.
