A... WORLD FAMOUS LOCOMOTIVE,

A recent issue of The Railway. Gazelia contained a very juterest- ing account of a paper rend before the Institution of Mechanical En gineers, by Mr. H. N. Greeley, the

well-known locomotive designer.

The paper dealt with high pressure locomotives, and a considerable por tion of it related to the high pres sure locomotive No. 10,000, of the

London & North Eastern Railway," which was designed by Mr. Greeley himself. This remarkable locomo tivo, which contains a number of most interesting and notable features, is designed to securo economy, both in power and main tenance costs, without any sacrifice of reliability. It has unquestion ably attracted a great deal of technical attention, which is shared by, the various concerns whose pro ducts have been employed in its construction. Thus, for instance, steal castings in the form of bogie and bissel centres were supplied for use in this locomotives by Edgar Allen & Co., Ltd, and it is a feather in the cap of the Imporial Steel Works, Sheffield, that its pro- ducts were deemed worthy for locomotive on whose performance so many critical eyes would be turned. HIGHER SPEEDS FOR LINERS.

Nearly all liner dwing panies are faced with the difficulty: that the now ships they build aro and faster than the older vessels,

is not always easy to maintain a entisfactory schedule, and, at the same time, take advantage of the improved speed of the new liners. The problema may be solved in some cueca, as, for intance, with the

Nolson Line, by building a number cf ships at one time, all of equal Rizo and speed, but not many shipowners aro able to carry out such a policy:

RECENT ELECTRIFICATION.

The oleotrification of tho Ja chester, South Junction and Altrin chom Railway, which was officially inaugurated in May, had been pro jected for some considerable time, | Las this line carries some of the

heaviest suburban traffic in the pro- vinoss. Apart from its importanco in this aspect, however, the olectri Action itself is one of the most interesting of recent years, as it is the first in Britain to operate on a 1,500 volt, D.C. supply, since tho

Two of the largest Dutch ship ping-concerns, the Rotterdam Lloyd and the Netherland Steamship Company, have considered it worth while to remove the machinery of comparatively now vessels and re- place it by engines of higher power, in order to make the spood of these vessels more nearly equal to those of the latest ships. In the case of the Netherland Steamship Com pany, two 20,000-ton 18-knot liners, the Johan Van Oldenbarnovoit and the Marnix Van St. Aldegonde, were added to the fleet last year, and it was thought desirable to in crease the speed of one of the exist ing vessels, the P. C. Hooft, which was built only five years ago, but which maintains scarcely more than 15 to 15 knots at son. In crder to raise this speed to about 173 knots it was necessary to instal power ap proximately double that previously used. The two 4,000 a..p. Sulzer well-known engines fitted have been replaced by units of 7,000
