FEATURES OF THE YEAR'S RACING-
CHINESE OWNER HEADS WINNING LIST: DUNBAR STABLE A CLOSE SECOND.
..
A FULL ANALYSIS OF STABLE AND JOCKEY SUCCESSES.
[BY MORNING DEW."]
The Arst half of the year's racing having been concluded, it is easy to foresee that the year 1931 ja destined to go down in the annals of racing in Hong Kong as one of the most outstanding periods inasmuch as it was the time in which several experiments were`stincessful- ly introduced. These innovations are all discussed in this article.
At the close of the half year's sport, Mr. Chan Tin Son heads the list of successful owners, his candidates having won the most moncy in stakes. Mr. Dunbar's stable comes in second and Mr. Dynasty's" "third. "It is of interest to note that Mr. Chan Tin Son has in his stable the redoubtable Woodland Stag, the crack Australian pony. Mr. Dunbar'a candidates include the ornick China pony, Diana Bay, while amongst the ponies which helped to swell Mr. Dynasty's. winnings was the Derby winner King's Service.
Among the jockeys, the most successful rider during the year was Mr. L. G. Frost who is a long way ahead of the others. Mr. A. J. P. Heard is second and Mr. B. A. Proulx third. The full analysis of jockey's success la given elsewhere in this review.
Of the ponies racing here, Apollo, who was kept back for the "Extra" season, earned the most in stakes. Diana Bay was second. Asiong the Australian ponics Woodland Stag and The Raindrop netted the best results. In the griffins class King's Servies, Valorous, Cyclamon Bay and Gold Key proved to be the most valuable stakes-earners, while among this season's subs, The Grouse earned almost $4,000, Misamis proved from results to be the second best sub, with Tun- ney, Fi-la and Tay following in that order. The full details of the stakes won by every pony, is also given below.
APOLLO WINS MORE STAKES THAN DIANA BAY.
Coming to the experiments intro- duced for the first time this year, the principal one was tho racing of Australian ponies in Hong Kong. A batch of twenty animals were imported and drawn for and they have provided some very good racing. The Australian ponies) made a big impression among race fans and the majority of them ap peared to fare quite well in the Hong Kong climate. Unfortunate- ly there was an exceptionally good pony in the batch so that events | in this class proved to be Wood- land Stag's race every time ho faced the starter and this notwith- standing the fact that he carried a huge weight on two occasions. In spite of this, however, the ex- periment to race Australian ponics here has proved an entire success, and next year, fifty more ponies are to be imported, so that there will be at least two races for Aus- tralian ponies on each racing day. At present only one race per meet- ing is possible.
THE STARTING GATE,
After six months' trial it can safely be said that the starting gate. has proved to be a great success. In the past, starting had been a matter of luck and there was grouse against the starter especially it a favourite was badly left. To day with this starting gate, a jockey has only himself to blame if he is left at the post since the element of luck is extremely small. In spite of this, however, I think it would not be unfair to say that the starting gate bag in some cases meant the undoing of several well- fancied, but highly strung, candi- dates. In this connection I feel; that one cannot over-emphasize the necesity of training a pouy to start properly, and I think a good idea would be to work the starting gate. at least once a week for the benefit of such as would like to avail them selves of the opportunity to use it.
NEW SCALE OF WEIGHTS,
A new scale of weight, effective from the beginning of this year was introduced and it has proved to be satisfactory all round. The new scale is as follows
13 hands 0 inch
140 pounds.
13 hands 1-inch......149 pounds. 13 hands 2 inches.....155 pounde. 13 hands 3 inches...),165 pounds. 14 hands ...........165 pounds." The scale for Australian ponies was slightly lower being as fol- lows:-
13 hands 2 inches....140 pounds. 13-hands 3 inches......140 pounds.. 14. bandaag pounde 14 hands 1 inch,165 pounds. 14-hands-s-Inches 159 pounds. While it would be hardly fair to attribute this year's fast times to the new scale of weight, it would be intereating to give at this stage the fastest-performances registered during the year for, the various distances. These are as follows

THE LEADING stable,
As stated before Mr. Chan Tin Son won the most money in stakes, with Mr. Dunbar second and Mr. Dynasty third. In this connection it is interesting to note that Vra. Dunbar's candidates also figured very prominently in the year's racing and if the candidates of Mr. and Mrs, Dunbar's' are 'taken to:
the race and since then had been beaton by those who were behind him in the Derby. The real reason why King's Service won the Derby appears to lie in the excellent riding of Mr. Y. 8. Chang, who is cer tainly one of the best jockays the Colony had seen for some time.
OTHER JOCKEYS...
Mr. Heard had 10 winning mounts and 4 places. He rode 80 ponies in all and was unplaced on only 37 occasions. Mr. Heard's problem'ap peared to be the question of weight as frequently he had to sacrifice good mounts simply because be could not make the weight,
The following ponies started more than ten times put wore unplaced.

Mr G. U. da Roza and Mr. G. A. Harriman rode, respectively; 88 and 88 ponies. The former won 9 races and was placed 21 times while the latter only won 8 and was placed 18 times.. Both are very good jockeys and it would be sur prising if they did not do very much better during the latter half of 1931 than the period under review.

CHINESE.
Chinese Athlotic inflicted a heavy defeat on South Wales Borderers. yesterday at the V.RO. in a first division match by the large margin, of 8 goals to nil the Chinese com hired
very well, and their short and accurate passing was & feature of
the panic.
In the second division the Argylls.. defeated the 20th Heavy Battery R.A. by three goals to mil. The Argylls were the more powerful of the two, and brute force rather than skill turned the tables...
Kowloon "A" scored a victory over the 31st Heavy Battery "RA by six goals to nit. They were un- doubtedly the better team their forwards being particularly good.
is generally known the next extra meeting of the Jockey Club will. be in September.
