HEALTH IN THE HOME.
FIRST AID FOR BLACK EYES.
A punch in the eye frequently results in the rupture of a num- ber of small blood vessels beneath the skin and the exudation of blood into the eyelids and into the loose tissues immediately below the lower eyelid. At first there is awelling and redness of the tissues, But soon the colour changes to the charac teristic play of colours seen in the black eye-dark blue, brown, green and yellow, Frequently, also, the white of the eye becomes blood- shot
An untreated black eye may be come most unsightly for a few days. Often, however, this may be pre- vented, or the ugliness at least very much reduced, by treating the eye immediately after the blow before it has become black.
So soon as you have been hit and there are the obvious beginningi of puffiness apply a firm pad of cotton wool-preferably soaked in cold or iced water-to the eyelids and tissues round them and keep it
in place with a bandage about the head. If convenient. the cold. pod can be renewed every half-hour or hour.
In this way the exudation of blood immediately following the blow will be greatly diminished and the resulting black eye will be less embarrassing.
Black eyes sometimes occur with- out any preceding injury, and if this happens more than once; so that you are quite certain that there was no simple explanation of it, you should be thoroughly over- hauled by your doctor.
If after an injury swelling ap- pears after 24 hours or longer, and particularly if the swelling, is con- fined to the lower lid, one should be suspicious of an injury more serious than an ordinary black eye.
HEALTH IN THE HOME.
BITES AND STINGS,
Most people take too serious view of dog bites, for, although hydrophobia or rabies is one of the most terrible diseases imaginable and can be conveyed to man by, the bite of a dog auffering from the disense, it fortunately very rarely occurs in this country. Neverthe less, it is wise to take all reason- able precautions, to avoid the dis- case, especially if the state of the animal is at all suspicious or if the bite has definitely broken the skin. Tho wound should then be cauterised with nitrate of silver, or
it may be even necessary to ent away the injured piece of skin.
The bites of cats or monkeys are particularly poisonous and such a wound should be kept under care- ful observation lest it should become septic.
The stings of insecs are especially troublesome because of the irrita tion they cause, accompanied by an averwhelming desire to scratch. This miny to a "great extent be mitigated by treating them with some sort of alkaline lotion.

HINTS FOR HOUSEWIVES.
If odd pieces of paper are soaked to a pulp and then mixed with ashes and amall coal and put at the back of the stove the fire will last for hours "without any, atten- tion.
Millinery wire, sewn, along the edges of short mats that show signs of curling at the corners, will keep them quite dat without any trou- ble..
When sewing dark material wear a white apron; the strain on the eyes, is echeiderably lessened.
To clean rusty curtain rings put them into hot vinegar and leave 24 hours, then dry and polish with dry bath-brick.
It is a good plan to stick curtain pins through soap before attaching. them to the clean curtains; this will prevent them from rusting,

Fresh herrings and other scaly fish are easier and quicker to clean if plunged for a moment into bail- ing water.
If a sprinkling of salt is added
to the fat in which fish is fried 'the' fish may be turned without the risk of breaking.
Soak potatoes in cold water for two hours before cooking and they will be white and floury. Add the salt when nearly cooked; this lessens the risk of their going to pieces.
The flavour of beef is consider- ably improved if well, salted over- night. The salt must be rubbed in, not merely sprinkled over.
Before favouring any cooked mixtures such as custards, let them. cool thoroughly, otherwise the warmth causes "the flavour to. escape, and the food tastes insipid,'
If you need a elcar fire for toast- ing throw a handful of salt on the coals..

When beating eggs place the mixing bowl in a dish of hot water, thus making the eggs froth quicker.

CHILDREN WHO WILL NOT
EAT.
Many parents cro confronted with the problem of the child who will not cat, and "a very worrying problem it is, for it usually con- cerns the child who is 'of the thin Whd "highly strung" type, and re- quires plenty of nourishment.
An American children's specialist has laid down four rules for the management of children who will not cat!".
1.Well-prepared meals, appetis ingly served, should be offered at regular times:
2-The child should not come to the table in a tired condition.
-The child-shall remain at table for 30 minutes..
4. No mention of food shall be made at or between meals.
Another which is equally import-
ant:
5. No enting between meals should be allowed.
