FINAL NOTE ON THE RACE,
THE FAVOURITE'S CHANCES.
To-night, we shall know the Derby winner, and the result will be awaited in Hong Kong as elec where, with very considerable in- terest.
Before attempting humbly to sum up tho situation, as an Englishman, andopo of a race somewhat "Backward in coming forward," I should like to say that this race is" The Derby," and neither the Epsom or English De. by. Various nations have a Derby as well, but in their case a prefix is necessary,
Cameronian is now a very hot favourite. Ho is excellently bred, and in Mr F. Darling could not be in the hands of a better trainer- or a sounder judge of capability. Previous to the Guineas he was -quoted-at about 20-1-for-that-race, and it seems highly probable that hia trainer expected to win with Lemnarchus rather than Cameron- ian. However, he won the Guineas in most convincing fashion. It' must be remembered, however, that the breeding of this horse points to his being better Fossibly over 1 miles than the Derby distance, and another small point which might be mentioned in that Fox will be up in place of Childs, and though as first rank jockeys there is nothing to chooss between them, horses do go better sometimes for a particular rider.
If Cameroniam in Benten?
If Cameronian is beaten, then I think that he will run unplaced.
Leaving this colt out of the race presents a difficult problem, for there seems little to choose on re- cent form between
