FOUR YEAR'S WORK IN UNCHARTED WATERS.

[BRITIAN WINKLERS SERVICE.}

Rumy, May 27. On the recommendation of the Committee of Civil Research, the oil driven vessel of 1,400 tons, the Challenger, which will have cruising range of 10,000 miles, is being built at Chatham Dockyard and will be launched next Mon day.

Early next year she will be put in commission for four years to carry out important survey and research work in the Arctic,

gondola.

INNSBRUCK, May 27. Fears for the safety of Professor Picard's halloon, which hovered at

great height over the Austrian Tyrol all day long, have been strengthen by the report that the balloon was sending out distress! signale, and apparently descending in the district of Venn, whither Police were rushed in motor-cars to give any assistance needed..

Found Unconscious,

Beast, May 28, The Swiss Aviation Bureau has received a telephone message to the effect that the balioon with Picard and his assistant, has come down on the Oetz Alps Gineier.

VIENNA, May 28.

Prol. Picard and Kipfer's fate it uncertain owing to inaccessibility to the spot on the great Gurgl near Pirch (Austrian Glacier, Tyrol), where the malloon descend ed.

It is reported, however, that s rescue party has found there conscious and relief aeroplanes ate flying to the scene..

Driited to Death?

LATER.

No report has been received of. the landing of Pivard's balinon and since it is hermetically sealed with mere ten hours' supply of oxygen, it is greatly fenred that the enthu Riusts have drifted to death.

HELIN, May 29, Daylight brought no news of the Balloonist Picard and his panien, Doctor' Kipfer.

Coin-

It is now regarded as practically certain that disaster has overtaken them. One theory is that the cold night air may have forced down the balloon and caused it to crash on the Austrian Tyrol. Another view held by many scientists is that the airmen in their sealed gondola met their death by suffocation, possibly through failure of the oxygen ap paratus. The fact that no reply has been received to rocket signals fired from the ground when the balloon was righted near Innsbruck

yesterday night tende to confirm

this theory.
