SEQUEL TO GLADSTONE COLLECTION LOSS.

TWO MEN ACCUSED OF

THEFT.

The loss of ivory carvings from the collection of the late Mr, W. E. Gindalone at Hawarden Conti in February had a sequel at Gravesend police-court.

Patrick Murphy, 60, dealer, "no fixed abode, and Thomas, James Rogers, 50, of Raphael-road, Grave- send, were charged with being con. corned together in breaking into Hawarden Castle, Flintshire, and stealing eighteen pieces of ivory carvings. They were further ad- cused of receiving the articles..

Mr. H. H. Brown, prosecuting, said that cighty pieces of ivory from the collection of ninety were taken away. The whole collection was valued at £857.

He had no direct evidence to show that the two ment were

Mr. Ogden replied that he did not, and Rogers left the shop. Later, Mr Ogden received, ä'letter from Royers; and particulars from the polies of the stolen goods.

Castle Gardens Meeting. Another letter from Rogers sug- gested that they should meet in Rochester Castle gardens," and the meeting took place under the oh- servation of the police. Rogers told Mr. Ogden that the ivories were at Birmingham, and he asked for money to pay his fare to get them hack. This was refused,

On April 10 Rogers appeared at Mr. Ogden's shop with five pieces of ivory in á fish basket. Rogers said, "You will have to come to my house in Gravesend, and there you will settle with Bert as to the die- posal of the property." Mr. Ogden

·went to Gravesend after communi- eating with the police.

tablo.

Ernest Sykes, second buttler at Hawarden Castle and Superinten~ dent Humphreys, of Mold, Flints hire, gave evidence as to the castle" being broken into, and the superin- tendent said that a pair of stock- ings, which had been worn over boots, were found in the grounds... Mr. Ogden said that when Rogeris went to bie shop, with the fishy' basket, he said, "I have a couplo of birds for you.
