GOVERNMENT GRANT TO MAURITIUS.

BELIET FOR SITUATION AFTER EARTHQUAKE,

London, May 14-In the House of Commons to-day Dr. Drummond Shiels, Under-Secretary of State for the Colonica, said the Govern- ment gave early and synyathetic consideration to the situation in Mauritius following the recent hur- ricane and proposed to make a grant of 83,000 in aid of relief of distress.

The Government would also guar antee the interest and sinking fund

payments of a loan to be raised, by the Government of Mauritius to bu used for the repair and replacement of Government property; loans.on security to planters and others, un to the amount of the losses suffered by hurricane, and construction of public works.

This assistance was subject to the condition, nccepted by the Colonia) Government, that a financial com. mission should be appointed to visit the Colony and advise on micasures to secare a balanced Budget at the earliest possible date.
