MEETING.

"BUS DRIVER'S EFFORTS TO | HANDICAPS AND ENTRIES

AVOID Á MISHAP,

An inquiry was held yesterday at the Kowloon Police Court, by Mr. E. W. Hamilton and a jury, into the death of Fung Foon, aged Go, who was killed on May 3 as the result of injuries sustained after being knocked down by a 'bus in "Nathan Road.

Private D. G. Smelton, of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, stated that at about 3.30 pm, on May 3 he was travelling in a 'bus going towards, the Star Ferry, The 'bus had pulled up at a stop about hundred yards from Mongkok Fire Station. The 'bus started off ngain, and when it was level "with the Fire Station's Chinese ran out from a sidestreet in front of the 'bus. The driver pulled up sound. ed his horn and swerved towards the middle of the rond. The 'bus was proveeding at a normal speed, and in Iris opinion the driver did everything he could to avoid the accident.

Private W. Crawford, Argyll ind Sutherland Highlanders, corro- borated Private Smelton's evidence, and said that he thought it was the front near-side mudguard which had hit the old man. He took no notice when the, driver sounded his, horn, and apparently did not notice the bus.

The dead man's son stated that his father was slightly dent. He was quite blind in his left eye.

Dr. P. F. 5. Court giving medical évidence stated that the right leg of the dead man had been shatter. cd and had to be emputated. He was suffering from shock, and con- cussion, There was haemorrhage on the left side of the brain, and alight haemorrhage on the right side of the brain. He died on May 4 as the result of his injuries.

The jury brought in a verdict of Recidental death, and exenerated the, driver from blame.

Mr. Somerset Fitzroy, for the Crown, explained that the two accused were members of a gang that waylaid sub-contractor named Chan Chuen and robbed him of an automatic pistel contuin- ing five rounds of ammunition, a. further loose five, rounds, and 8910 in money. The sub-contractor had 81,200 with him which he was tak ing to pay the workmen employed on the new water scheme at Aber- deen.

Attacked by Gang,

Chan had gone about 150 yards. along Lady Clementi's Drive, whịch was the nearest way to his mat- shed, when he encountered five men carrying sticks. They attack- ed him and threw him down. After removing his holster containing the revolver, they went through his pockets. They were apparently in a hurry, fearing that the workmen might come along at any moment. They relieved him of $810, after which they put a sack over his head, and tied him with ropes.

Bome time later a woman hap- pened to pass that way and she informed the people at the mat shed. When the workmen arrived, they followed his footmarks leading down to the hillside and found the two, accused hiding in the under growth. One man had a $500 and à $100 note in the lining of his cap, while the other had in his ppssession a $100 note. matter of fact, both men were re- cognised as having called at the matshed earlier in the day, osten- sibly in search of work,
