IMPORTANCE OF WEATHER FORECASTS.

NAVAL EXPERT'S INTERESTING ADDRESS AT

ROTARY CLUB LUNCHEON.

BRITISH TENNIS STAR'S TRAVELS AND EXPERIENCES.

The value of correct weather forecast to aviation, navigation and to business generally, was stressed by Lieut.-Comdr. Dymott at an address given by him at the Rotary Club luncheon yesterday. Among the guests present was Mr. E. D. Andrews the British tennis star," who gave a brief account of his travels in the various countries he has visited during his many tennis tours.

During the early part of the pre- sent century no great progress.was mads and it is very largely due to the great war that forecasting has made such rapid strides. In the first place, during the war, the Norwegians, whose prosperity is so intimately connected with the fishi- ing industry and with shipping, found themselves at a considerable: diandvantage owing to the fact that the combatants bad suppressed the issue of all weather information. Norwegian scientists, therefore, undertook an intensive investigation of the atmosphere and its habits and succeeded in utilising changes of temperature, particular the changes at mountain observation stations.

ALB

Also the enormous increase in aviation made it necessary that the atmosphere should be studied in all three dimensions, instead of Burface treating weather phenomenon. As a result of this change of policy, the atmosphere is being studied as a gas, consisting of air and water vapour, which ex- pands or contritets with alterations of temperature and pressure, in a manner similar to a

In aviation the greatest source of danger and loss of life, apart from errors of judgment, is the weather. This is now recognised in both military and civil aviation, and the pilots of air liners always pay visit to the forecast departments of the big air ports before embark ing on a journey.
