SHIP PROPULSION..
THE PRICE OF SPEED AT SEA,
The approaching completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company's liner, Empress of Bri- sin, to be employed on the South- rmpton-Quebec service, draws fresh "attention to the problems of econo. mic speed at sea, since her 'pro- jceted spend of 94 knots will be considerably greater than, that cm ployed with any ocean-going mer- chant ships, excepting thosa engag. ed in the Europe New York express 1. services.
Her length of 730ft., beam of Dift, in, and depth of 60ft. Din. to shelter deck, provide some in. diention of the price, to be paid, in the form of increased dimon- 81ons, to accomandate the extra machinery and fuel weight required" for propulsion at this high speed, and a further measure is provided by the following comparison of the recent ships of varying speeds, fitted with generally similar ar rangements of machinery, that have been built for the same
owners:

21 42,000- The deadweight represents the effective useful marrying capacity of the ship, and includes passengers and their effects, consumable stores, express cargo, the personnel re- quired for operating the ship, and the fuel, water and staren neees sary for the operation of the ma chinery. This figure for the Em. press of Britain is not yet available but it will probaidy approximate to that of the Empress of Japan, so that an increase in speed from 17 knots to 24 krain for about the. same effective carrying capacity nearly doubles the size of ship re- quired.
On the other band, increased speed enables savings to be offected because of the shorter time for which the passengers have to be maintained on the voyage, and ex- tra voyages can be accomplished in the course of the season. The speed of 24 knots decided upon for the Empress of Britain will enable the passage between Southampton and Quebec to be performed in under five days so that e turn round in two daya at each terminal port would permit the maintenance of a weekly service on this route with iwo ships. Just as the Cunard Company have selected a speed of 20 knots for their new Southampton and New York' service fur, this ren-. sen, so it may prove that the re- Intively high speed of the Empress of Britain ans been chosen with the object of eliminating the third ves sel ordinarily, required to maintain a weekly service with ships run. ing at what have, hitherto been regarded as economic speeds.

The problem of providing incronS- ed speed on a service like that be. tween Southampton and Quebec is intensified by its seasonal nature, but this difficulty is ingeniously met in the Empress of Britain by | CASABLANCA. subdividing the machinery so that
the off season ste can be efficient y employed in world craising. The quadruple-sorow machinery is so designed that the two inner shafts are driven by turbines developing two-thirds of the total of 05,000 a.h.p. and these alone will be in operation for the slower speeds ro- quired in world cruising.
