MALCOLM CAMPBELL'S NEW RECORD,
:,,-,----
SOME DETAILS OF THE "BLUE BIRD.”
THE MOST POWERFUL CAR IN THE WORLD.
For the second time within two year's a British driver in a motor cur designed and built in Great Britain, of British materials and workmanship, has travelled faster on land than man had over done before, and the world has been stirred by the achievement of Capt, Malcolm Campbell who,ver the measured mile at Day- tona Beach, Florida, piloted his 1,400 h.p. Napier Blue Bird rae- ing car onge up and once down at is average speed of 215.730 m.p.k., 14.37 m.p.h, faster than the récord established by the late Sir Henry Segrave on the same bench two years ngo,
The Design.
The successful British ear, which weighs approximately 3 tons, is of particularly low design and is propelled by a Napier racing arco rugine. It is the most powerful car ever constructed, an the actual power obtained is 1,450 h.p., whilst its Napier engine has a greater, power per 100 cc. than any engine
in the world.

The wind tunnel tests demon-¦ strated that with the radiator in front, the least possible resistance is nuta hod. The radiator is of the ordinary honeycomb type, designed specially for the car,

Napler-Campbell · Car Specification, Body. The body has a frame work of steel tubes, covered with aluminium panels. The tail por tion, which is the only fixed part of the car, is designed rather on the lines of the tail of an plane.
The petrol tank is mounted at the rear end of the chassis and has
capacity of 23 gallons.
The oil tank is mounted inside the frame member alongside the engine and contains five gallons.
The wheelbase is 12 ft. 21 in., the front track 5 ft, 4 in, and the rear track 5 ft 2 in..
Wheels and Tyres-Special whools of the steel disc type designed and built by the Dunlop Rubber Co. sith Dunlop tyres designed after a series of special tests to ensure their being apable of standing up to the high speeds anticipated. ↑

The rest of the body has three exctions of pauels, all easily detach- uble. One section encases the 1,400 b.p. Napier engine, another makes up the cockpit, and the third is the entre section connecting the cock pit with the engine cowling. The whole body is constructed of ex-

The Austin Seven in which Captain Malcohn Campbell scrared the International Class H. Record at a speed of $4.031 m.p.h. at Dayton, Florida, ott February 6, 1931. This record was previously held by the Austin Seven at 87.7 m.p.h. It is interesting to note that the Seven has secured a greater number of successes than any other car in the world Also these competition ears are built of standard parts.

As long ago as May last, designs were pre- pared and a small plasticine model with which exhaustive wind tunnel tests wore carried out, to ensure that resistance has been reduced to a minimum with the result that in the now modified Napier-Camp- b was produced a car with n smaller wind resistance that any car of such high pawor, kat withstanding that the frontal area of 14.5 sq. ft. is greater than that of the "Golden Arrow."
་
The chassis was designed to en- able Capt. Campbell to sit as low ns possible. The central casing of the rear axle was, therefore, affect 7 in: with the result that the driver's seat is only 10 in. from the ground.
The two rear springs have differ- ent camber, so that when the car is at rest the body is slightly tilted to the offside. This provides that whon engine torque comes into play, the chassis is brought on to at even keel.
o
A fireproof bulkhead in fitted im "mediately bohind the engine,
na to obviate risk of danger-to the driver in the event of fire.
The body is ingeniously arrang- cd. Its framework of steel tuber scovored with aluminium panels. The body is in four sections. The tail portion, the only fixed part of the body, is designed on aircraft principles and gives the car tho appearance of an aircraft fuselago un wheels Another section encases the powerful Napier engine, whilst the cockpit, built specially round Capt. Campbell, is connected to the engine cowling by the third section of this body.

Special fairings have been fitted co all four wheels. To obtain the the greatest advantage from, these, they have been built close up to the tyres. They are constructed of stout aluminium with the ex ception of a 8 in. overhang which is of smaller gauge. This is ar ranged so that should a tyre become deflated by a cut and the tyre hit. the overhang, this would crumple up without harm to the remainder of the wheel fairing or possibility of overturning the car.
A specially designed Triplex glass screen is fitted.
Chassis.-The frame is underslung under the rear axle to provide a very low layout, the centro gravity being considerably under the centre line of transmission,

Tubular cross members are used throughout, some of which are made out of solid forgings and machined.
· The engine is supported on a sub- trame, made under a similar prin ciple as the chassis, and providing a threepoint suspension by one sphorical socket in the front and two at the rear.
