Reasons:-

Sin, There is a struggle, goingpensate us for what we have Lost on in this Colony at the present since the Dollar fell from 2/ moment between legitimate business mign and speculators. It is a strug. gle of life and death, of right and wrong, of business and gambling. On the outcome of this struggle hangs the future, welfare of the whole Colony, and it is superffus

to emphasize that no community can exist on a gambling basis-par ticularly a community such as Hon Long

It is unthinkable that the Com- mission could be foolish enough to believe the Assertions that this would Injure Trade; they are in deed Fallacious; they are made solely by Tourists, Brokers and Uncharitable Folk; whereas this petition represents the Unanimous Opinion of all the Merchants, Investors and Traders of the

Colony.

If the Dollar were stablised at 4, the Government would save $12,000,000 a year on their Budget Sterling Commitments, and this Considerable Sum will be available

to pay the Cost of Stabilisation.

Nor are things any better when the races are over and passangers attempt to get from the race couren to the railway station, The agram- ble for a pince on a bus is so great that the conductor is helpless

coping with the rush. Nothing so far appears to have been done to improve matters although this state of affairs has been going on for some time. in its midst are mostly influential TO THE EDITOR OF THE HONG KONG thinking of organising a special people of the community, therefore, their words have more, weight, Bat since the Currency Mission is for impartial investigation, I hope nothing but the prosperity and welfare of the community will be taken into consideration. Right after all is right and must even- tually win a hearing.

Besides, we have tried silver standard long enough and the result is what it is to-day. It does not pay to stick blindly to it and it is only fair to give gold standard a chance. To say that gold stand- ard will ruin the trade of Hong Kong without even giving it a trial is too eowardly to require Any comment. We know one thing. however, what, gold standard will ruin, and that is, it will ruin the game of exchange speculation.

A certain compradore who has made much ill-gotten gain from exchange gambling is now giving all the publicity he can to fight against stabilization. Let us ruember that the oldest monarchy in the world has had to bow to the will of the majority and that its Fall has been caused by pens, therefore, let us fight this compra. dors and his gang with our migh tiest instrument-our pens! Let us do not remain passivo! Do not let them crucify us on a cross of silver! Do not forget that every. thing is at stake and that to allow the speculators to win is equiza- lent to allow ourselves and poster- ity to murdered by them! They ure ruthless; they are, merciless; and we must struggle with them with all our might or be crushed forever The most critical moment has arrived and let all unselfian eitizens of Hong Kong do their duty for the future prosperity of Hong Kong by stamping out gambling in exchange once for all!

THE CURRENCY PETITION. [TO THE EDITOR OF THE "HONG KONG

DAILY PRESS."]

Sin, The letter which has been drafted for forwarding to the Currency Commission, requesting them to stabilise the Hong Kong. dollar at 2/ in not nearly ambitious enough. After all, if it is such a simple matter as the author of the letter appears to believe, to fix 'our dollar at 2/- by means of a loan, why not make the lonn rather bigger and stabilise at 4/-?

I propose to calist support among all the disgruntled members uf-the-community who-would-like- to see the dollar stabilised at 4/5, end to place a petition to this | effect in various places whereit. may be signed by all and aundry: nt the Star Ferry, Peak Tram Etation, the aweet-stuff shops, and the public bars.
