HONG KONG'S POPULATION.

A TOTAL OF 852,000.

KOWLOON'S POPULATION DOUBLED,

The Colony's total population, 'according to the preliminary re- port of the Ceustis Officer (Mr, W. J. Carrie) in 862,000 compared with 625,000 test years ago. Kowloon, as might be expected, is shown i have doubled its population, and the Island inhabitants have increased in numbers from 317,000 to 424,000, The New Ter- ritories and the floating population are very much the same in. numbers as they were in 1921."

Mates still exceed females, the respective figures being 480,00 men to 383,000 wamen. The disparity is not, however, is great proportionately as it was, being now 742 females to every 1,000 - males, compared with 033 in 1921. That auggests that mere Chinese are settling here and making the place their home.

Two comments only need be made at this stage.

-This population of the Island of Hong Kong has increased by 77,000 only, a smaller increase than that which took place in the previous decade; the population of Kowloon has more, than doubled itself.

-The masculinity of the population continues to decrense. In 1921 there were only $33 females per 1,000 males; in 1931 the proportion had risen to 742.
