really is not as you may imagine
him to be.
A man or youth who presents
himself for enlistment must neces sarily be both physically and men tally fit, and he must also be able to pass an educational test. Ad- mittedly, his test in not a stiff one, but it goes to prove that the re- eruit is not illiterate. Naturity, from time to time, men have creat into the Service who should have gone to Dartmoor for their train ing, and such men as Topliss, Lin-
i
coln, and a few others have cer tainly not done very much to up: hold the honourable traditions of our Army. Nevertheless, accidents happen even in the best of regulat fed families., Exequently we read of cases where solicitors, bankers, and even policemen have been convict ed for their misdeeds, and yet we regard their professions as most honourable. Why not? Then why look down on the soldier simply because, there are a few bad eggs in the Army 1
Education.
»
At the earliest possible opportu- nity the recruit commences his training, not as a soldier only, but Also a man, and who of the time expired, can authfully say that they have not gained by this training? Not one of them, unless, of course, it is one of the gentle men who were discharged, their services no longer being required." or by those who should have been so discharged..
The soldier attends a Regimental school each day until he has obtain- cd at least a second class education certificate, for which he receives 3rd per diem extra pay. Not much, it is true, but together with an- other 3rd per diem for good shoot ing, a thrifty man would very soon put this little to a good purpose. Thousands of men in the Army are in possession of "Firsts," while quite a good number are in posses• sion of
Specials." So much for the educational side of a soldier's training,

On March 23, Mr. Summers went to Canton with Mr. Curtis, and on. Chinese studio that day the assistant in the Hong Kong offes received a rogistered letter from Shanghai, and, enclos ing it with another letter addressed to Mr. Curtis, put both into & plain envelope, addressed to Mr. Summers, e/o Victoria Hotel, Shameen, Mr. Summers returned from Canton on March 28, and stated that he had not received the letter. He questioned the office as sistant, and he naturally thought that it might have been hung up" at the Chinese Post Office.
Mr. Summers waited for a while, and on April 1, he went to the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank to make enquiries, and was then in- formed that a cheque for L. E. Gale Company had already been enshod at the Kowloon branch office
