APOLLO BEATS HETMAN
HERCULEAN STRUGGLE IN EASTER STAKES: RACE WON IN RECORD TIME.
CHINESE STABLE HAS SUCCESSFUL DAY: FOUR
WINNERS AND TWO SECONDS.
J'BY
"MORNING DEW."')
One of the most thrilling races seen locally for many a day was stiger on Saturday whon Apollo met and accounted for Hetman in the Easter Stakes over a mile, both carrying 100 pounds. The race was one which many racegoers had been wanting to BỊC for a long time as opinion, until Saturday at least, seemed divid- ed as to which of the two ponies was the better one.
Hetinau, it will be remembered, ran second to Diana Bay in the Champions daat month, while Apollo did not even fice the « starter. Consequently, it was not surprising, that, "when the two ponies accepted for the Easter Stakes, there should have been juht a few more backers an Hetman than on Apollo.
Mr. Front rode Apollo and Mr. de Roza Hetman. Both ap peared to have the no idea-win at all cost. Apollo was sent over the first quarter in 26.4 seconds, but Hetman was right at his heels. The first half mile was completed in 58.9 seconds, but ngain Hetman was well up. There was no daylight between tho two ponies over the third quarter na Hetman gradually crept up on Apollo and for a timå looked på if he would pass him, but Mr. Frost Bent Apollo out just before the straight was reached and from that point the race was all over në Hetman allowed his op- ponent to canter home by himself, It is obvious that the earlier pace, had "killed Hetman, but the performance which he put up, on the whole, was as good" as might have been expected. It might be interesting to add that after the 65.2 seconds over the half mile Apollo went on to somplete the three-quarters of a mile in 1. minute 28 seconds and to complete the mile journey in the record time of 1 minute 57.4 seconds.
