NO PUBLIC BEACHES.

GOVERNMENT'S REPLY TO HON, MR. BRAGA.

REASONS FOR DECREASED SUPPORT.

At yesterday's meeting of the the Hon. Legislative Counell, Colonial Secretary, in reply to. questiona put by Hon, Mr. Braga, indicated that there will be no qublic bathing matsheds, oither in Hong Kong or Kowloon this year, except at Kennedy Town.

The question and sawer were as follows:-

Hon. Mr. Braga:-Will the Hon- ourable the Colonial Secretary state whether any reduction is contem. plated this summer in the facilitios Usually afforded to residents in Hong Kong and at Kowloon in the nlatter of public liathing beaches? Tha Colonial Secretary:-The use made of the public bathing beaches in Kowloon has deerensod so much in the last year or twa'that no provision was made for this pur- Load in the Estimates for 1931. The principal reasons for the decrease appear to be the growth of bathing clubs and the provision by caterers of dressing accommodation with facilities for teas and refreshments. An concorns Tai Wan Beach, this section of foreshore is now the subject of sale negotiations and is not thoroforo in any case available. No public matahedi will be erected there or at Lai Chi Kok.

On the island it is proposed, for the same reasons, to givo up the public bathing sheds at Repulse Bay and at North Point and, to erect only smaller accommodation at Kennedy Town, whore there is still some demand. The beach at. Repulso Bny will continue to be kept clean and precautions as be- foro will be taken for the protection of bathora.

Lighting in Waterloo Road. Mr. Braga also asked the follow- ink

regarding the lighting of Waterloo Road:--

1. Has the attention of Govern- inent been drawn to the nows paper report of a serious motor- car accident happening at Kow- loon on the night of March 23 nt n point in Waterloo Road close to ite junction with Nathan Rond, where the rond is described as "xtremely narrow and not particularly well lighted night"

at

9. With a view to minimising the risk of similar accidents in future, will the Government con- sider the advisability of improv. ing the public lighting of road- ways within the residential areas in Kowloon The Colonial Secretary'e roplies were as follows:

1. Yes,

2. The Government considera that the residential areas of Kow- loon are adequately lighted. The portion of Waterloo Rond in which the accident occurred is not yet completed and, as an uncom- ploted road, motorists should use it with caution. The, covering of the nullah is boing extended east- wards as rapidly as funds permit ond in due course the roadway will be opened to the fall width now possessed by the section go- ing to the cast of the railway.
