the winner, Grakle,

Grakle, by the way, was favourite last year, starting at 100/12, but In foll the second time round. February last he was third to Apostasy and Don Sancho three miles threo" furlongs at Bir mingham, 12 lengths behind the 1 winner.

over

However three milo, and three. and a half mile Steeplechases over Park courses are no real test for the National, but are the only trials which, are possible.

Was

Gregalach's effort was surprising he failed badly this year both at Newbury and Lingfield, nnd his display at the latter course described as pathetic. He was stated as "done" at any rate for the time being, and was stated to be suffering froth some internal troub le,

con-

Annandale ran in the race last year, was conspicuous first time reund, but foll. He is π sistent horse, won two small chases last year and was placed in several, His nge is eight, and he should be noted for next year.

+

Another to remember is Clan- gosia, four last year, and coventh this year. He is ten years old however, and the distance seems just too much for him.

It is sad to realise that two amongst these very gallant animale, lost their lives in the race., Swift Rowland and Drin. One begins to wonder, is it fair on the horses and are not we asking just a little too much of them!

Without doubt there will be re- newed controversy on this ques- tion, for there are many who con- sider the race a crust one.

The National is our greatest lest of ability and stamina, and although essentially it must be a stiff proposition to negotiate, în fairness to the animals, engaged, who have to race whether they like

it or not, it scums that one or two of the worst obstacles might be modified, even if it means adding several additional junips. An ac- eident may happen of course at the smallest jump in steeplechase, on the other hand there are one or two jumpa at Aintree that seem to ask for really serious trouble,

All said and done, Racing is a sport, we go out for a day's on- jaymont, not to come back depress. ed as any lover of a horse must have dono this year at Aintree.

The Lincolnshire.

Kuight Error won the Lincoln, and was well fancied. The second horse Rattlin-the-Reefer was rather unexpected, he only won a small race at York last year, this over G furlongs in August. He is a five- the year-old and has been over hurdies this season, so no doubt was vory fit:

Jacopo is trained by Captain Boyd-Rochfort, and in four out- inge last season secured three wins and accond place. He was se- cond to Doctor Dolittle in the Im perial Produce Stakes, beaten only by a neck: won the Molecombed Rtaken at Goodwood vallie £1010. and the Windsor Castle Stakes at. Asect value £2105.

Two other good ones are Reveil Jon and St. George in the stable of J. Jarvis, and both are mid thavo made more than normal progress. Sandwich is also in the sams stable, is a half brother to Manna and ran but once last year. Another horse to have made con. sidorable improvement is Homer, trained by John Watson, In the Middle Park Stakes at Nowmarket over 6 furlongs, last season, ha was. third to Portlaw and Goyoacas, and war 4th to Doctor Dolittle, Jacopo, and Leopard in the Im perial Produce Btakos.

Horitage, trained by C. Waugh, did not win as a two-year-old, but was placed in his last fivo races, and was only beaten a head by Dri Dolittle into Newbury, Autumn For Plate The Derby should be a most ateresting race, this Jear."

The following horse was entered in Paris-Highbred.

The Quality of the entry for the City and Suburban is not so good

STAR

DUE TO THE

that for the Jubilee, but if such as The MacNab, Rustom Pnaho, Strephon 11, Lucky Tor, The Pon, Christopher Robin, Sol de Torro and Athford, are trained for this it should be interesting

enough.

bast

For the Jubilee the quality is good, a representative entry of the middle-distance horses in training. Diolite should be well suited by the easy mile and a quartor, and last year. Paronthesis was second in the St. Leger, Singa- pore won that race, Rustom Pasha showed himself to be a good middle distance horse, Ut Majeur ran well in the St Leger and won the Cesaro- witch, The Pon won the Cambridge. ahire, Lucky Tor the Jubilee and City and Suburban, The MacNab the Royal Hunt Cup, and Bheedale was considored unlucky to bayo been beaten in the Cambridgeshire. Pinrit must also be noted,

In the Queen's Pride the most interesting entries are the gallant old Sir Joshua, Jugo, Artia Star and Trimdon.. also Empire Builder. one of the best of Inst, season's four-year-olds, and of better class than the other entries hero.

Vory

For the Victoria Cup, a interesting entry in The Recordar, just beaten in the Cambridgeshire last sineon, and expected, if fit to win this race and later on the Roy al Hunt Cup at Ascot. Ho seeme an ideal horse for the latter race.
