DAY OF BIG DIVIDENDS.

OUTSIDERS ACCOUNT FOR ALL THE

PRINCIPAL EVENTS,

TOM WINS MAIDENS: "DUNBAR" GRIFFINS

DISAPPOINT ON FIRST DAY'S RACING.

[By "MORNING DEW."]

The result of the first day's racing at the 193! Annual Meet- ing was productive of a number of surprises and favourites on the whole find a very lean time.

In the griffins class, the Maiden Stakes and the Hopeful-Staken Tell to outsiders, Mr: Stanton's Tom accounting for the former and Mr. Li The Foug's Gold Key coming home in the Intter. Both paid handsame dividends to their apportera.

In the subscription griffina class, Messrs, Hall and Shenton scored a double with The Quail and The Grouse by accounting for both the Wong Nei. Cheong and the Valley Stakes. The vic- tories of these panics were as surprising as they were popular.

Diana Bay, as predicted, stated, in the Foochow Cup and ́ made the remainder of the field jook like sellingplaters. Ho paid a very lean" dividend to his supporters, but it was not so small as the dividend paid by, Apollo, who accounted for the China Stakes in effortless fashion.

The race for Australian ponies was productive of some real speed, The much-fancied Kilren was beaten by Woodland Stag by. 'n length after a gruelling finish and Wattle took third place three

Place three further lengths behind.

Honours were fairly evenly spread among the jockeys, Mr. Quingey accounting for two wins and a third. Mr. Frost won twice and five other jockeys had winning mounts.

DERBY PROBLEM STILL UNSOLVED.

"The reuil of Saturday's racing Grouse. Azalea Leaf, after strug still leaves the Derbs problem very gling manfully with a bad start, open. All the Dunbar candidates came through the ruck fairly late in the griffins glass failed to get in the straight and offered a belated even places with the exception of challenge to The Grouse, finishing Cyclamen Bay, which rau second strongly a length behind. to Tom in the Maidens. Sam Hou- stan did not start on Saturday but will probably be seen in action to-day. He will probably be the stable's representative in to-mar. row's big event.

The double victory of The Quail and The Grouse in the subs events was totally unexpected. There was

Tridgo Hall, chosen to race Tango | on the outside instead of awerving ́into the rails a hundred, yards from home and trying to pass on the in- side. Mr. Frost's sucess on the subs in the earlier.part of the day was a brilliant that although he was riding Tron. Blood,, an obviously outclassed pony, Hs was made third favourite. Such is famo!
