The author of "may" che, they owe him their ab. this article, Mr. C. B. Pudon, solite loyalty. The producer is the
niaster of the stage.
writes:
There are plenty of good plays and any number of good, amateur aetors; but anecas on the amateur stage depends upon production,
There are people the would dis- that statement, for they con- pute sider that the right play is enough in itself, or that a suficient num! ber of capabla actors can do what is necessary to please on audience. They are the people who look upon the performanos of a play as the outcome of in sicrsion of for tunate accidents: Amateurs who take their work seriously, however, know people, ars, wrong. The play and the actors depend upon tho producer.
What is the producer's Junetinu ? It is to got the written play in terpreted on the stage. He has to get carried out in acting staging costumes and lighting what the dramatist has written in the form
of dialogue and stage directions. The producer is the leader of a dramatic company. He organises
the stage production. He.controls the play as a whole. He makes unity of the play, acting and staging. That is why the producer must know something of all the arts of the theatre: he should re- ally be a master of them; but per- haps that is too much to expect. Becauso so much is expected of them good producers are scarce
even on the professional stago,
There are producers who tend to be concerned only with their own ideos. They make production inte something that can be separated from the play and acting. We find examples of their work, in Russia and in many of the expori. mental theatres in other countries. Importance of Climax. Let us consider how a producer should proceed. He should have a reier in choosing the play and the selection of the cast for it. Thon
he should study the play until he He should knows it inside out. study every character, and vitun. lise very part of the action until la hai the whole movement of the play off by heart, He sould, de. He should make a sente plan of each scene, showing entrances, exits and position of properties. He should plan 'out the positions of the astors at the critical moments of the play. To do,
this properly he should know the stage on which he is to work, its size, its equipment and its peculiarities, and plan his produc- tion accordingly.
When the producer has done all that, he should he ready for re- hearsnis. The first "all" should he

He should be ne explana. tory as possible always, and should urge the players to learn their words without delay. He should arrange when and where the re- hearsals are to be held.
