JOHANNESBURG, Feb. 17.

In sunny weather and in the pro sence of a small attendance, the Englishmen resumed their inninga, and Tate played a vigorous game for 38 runs before being caught by McMillan. He was at the wickets for only 25 minutes, and he hit four sixers and two fours.

The innings was declared closed when the score had reached 189 runs for the loss of nine wickets.

The South Africans went in for their second innings with Siedlo. and Curnow, but the former was caught by Hammond oft Tate when he had compiled 8 runs.

When the lunch interval arrived the score was 24 runs for the loss of one wicket.

On resuming Curnow was given out leg-before, when he had scored

12 runs.

Mitchell played a fino stylish innings for 74 runs, He was in two bours and ten minutes, and he hit 12 fours.

LONDON, Feb, 17. That there has been a univer sal catastrophic" fall in freights is brought out in a report prepar ed for the annual meeting of the Chamber of Shipping on February:|| 19, showing that throughout 1030 tramp froights were below pre- War figures. The cffcel of this on the British financial situation. was that whereas shipping in 1920 :con- |tributed £130,000,000 to the nation- al Budget, the corresponding figure last year An no higher than £100,000,000.
