Saturday's English League matcher held a number of surprises to the teams in high places from the lasser lights. Grimsby, who during the week worked their way up from the bottom by defeat ing Derby County, repeated their success over West Ham United. Arsenal and Wednesday, both at the top of the First Division, had to content themselves with one point, Bolton sharing the points with the thampions. Aston Villa had a comfortable win over Huddersfield, while Leicester, who were soundly trounched by. Arsenal two days before, gavo Hartlepoola a lensoon in gont acoring.

Everton made further advance in the Second Division with a 7-0 win over Charlton. Rending performed an unexpected foat in beating the Wolves, Notts Forest also coming into the limelight with a good win again Bristol City. Notts Country, Southend,. Crystal Palace and Northants, at the top of the Southern Section, were all beaten, and Brighton took advantage of this to get to second place. Lineola, Chesterfield and Stockport, in the other Section, were both out of luck. Tranmere shared the points with Wrexham..

The Scottish League had als its share of uncertainties. Tho Rangers lost for the fourth time, while East Fife, in the position of wooden-spoonists, took the points from St. Mirren.
