GROUP OF SOLDIERS MALTREAT CIVILIANS.

CANTON, Feb. 8.
A fatal brawl occurred last night on the East Bund when some 40 soldiers set upon two civilians and shot and killed one of them.
The circumstance, leading to the tragedy are still shrouded in rays hery, as the miscreants escap

the rosult of Q. quarrel between a soldier and the deceased.
Fighting has of late been of fre. quent occurrence on the East Bund it:etween these rawdy oloments. In one of these fights a soldier was severely beaton and had to be "taken to hospital for medical treat. Inoat. The aggressor, a workman from the fruit market, was arrest- ed and heavily fined. But this did not satafy the injured soldier, who, it is alleged, gathered together over 40 of his companions and watched night after night for a chance to retaliate.
Their chanco came, it is believed, inst night, with the fatal result
above reparted.
