THE PAPAL ENCYCLICAL ON MARRIAGE.

SUMMARY OF DENUNCIATION OF "MODERN PRACTICES."

"EMISSARIES OF THE GREAT ENEMY."

ROME, January 8.

The Papal Encyclical upon Christian marriage, which his Holincas had intended for the Sacred College of Cardinals at Christmas, was published this evening dated December 31, 1930.

Striking the keynote with the opening words," Casti Con- nubii by which it will be known--this document of some 18,000 words is likely to taka rank alongside the teost important ency. · clicals of modern times. It is marked by great candour of speech and a corresponding vigour of expression. It sats forth the position of the Roman Catholic Church 'regarding every modern aspect of married life. Thus, for example, the Popo refers to divorce; birth control; temporary, experimental, and companionate marriages; the use of contraceptives; the procuring of abortions; eugenics, with special reference to the sterilization of the unfit; the emancipation of women; sex education; the obedionor of tho wife to the husband; maternity work; the reaction between poverty and social revolt, and finally the co-operation between Church and State in support of the moral law.

'THE INVIOLABLE STABILITY IS MENACED."

ܪ ܂

The underlying argument through. out is that Christian marriage is a Divine ordinance, and therefore indissoluble in the interests not

only of the parents themselves but

also of their children.

should enjoy thu samo rights as the chaste motherhood of the lawfully wedded wife.

Attacking then "experimental," "temporary and "companionate" forms of matrimony, the Pope de clares that these are "hateful abominations, which beyond all question reduce our truly cultured nations to the barbarous standards of marriage. - The barden of the evils opposed to each of the Lenefits of matrimony, the Pope declares that the first of them is connected with- the offspring of marriage. The burden of children (ho says) leads some poo- ple to frustrate the marriage_act: Such nation is shameful and in- trinsically viciona While the Church sympathizes with those peo- ple who in extreme want experi once the greatest difficulty in rear- ing their children, care must be taken lost a more calamitous error should befall them. As for the tak. ing of the life of the offspring hid den in the mother's womb, which it was sought to justify on various grounds, nothing, not even the mo ther's health, could justify the "direct murder of the innocent."

Similarly the Pope condemns the proposed storilization of the unit/ Those who act in this way," he declares, are at fault in losing sight of the fact that the family is more snored than the State and that men are bogotten not for the earth and time, but for heaven and eternity." There are also false teachers who maintain the "idle opinion" that some people have the moment," and which consists an "inborn soxual tendency which in a "deep attachment of the heart" cannot be satisfied within the nar row limits of monogamonis marri and a perfect partnership in do- mestic life, From this point the age." The same teachers advocate the emancipation of women on Popo passes to consider the quee physiological, social, and economic

wife." Moreover, this "false liber- ty and unnatural equality with the husband is to the detriment of the woman herself, for she onco des- cada from her truly regal throne she will soon be reduced to her former state of elavory." At the same time the public authorities should adapt the civil rights of the wife to modern means and requirements
