77 GIRLS IN GAOL WITHOUT.

TRIAL..

REVELATIONS OF NEW POLICE METHODS,

New York, Thursday, January 8. Startling revelations that scores of young girls have been illegally sent to the Bedford Reformatory were made to-day before the grand jury which is investigating the charges of alleged corruption in sevaral New York magistrate courts.

Evidence was produced to show that seventy-seven girls between the ages of sixteen and twenty-one, who pleaded guilty to being way- ward minors, were sent to the re- formatory without trial, in direct violation of the Stato law, which prohibite the acceptance of a guilty ples by minors.

Fifty-one of these girls are still prisoners.

Judge Seabury, who is conduct- ing the investigation, announced that he is submitting a list of the girls still detained to the Gover nor of the State, with a view to having many of the girls pardoned.

According to the State law, minors can only be committed to roformstories on the complaint of a parent or other authorised per son, and not on their own plea of guilt. They must also be given a full court hearing bofore sentence can be passed.
