RACE.

BRITISH GOVERNMENT ÄUTHORISE DEFENCE.

{TBROVON REUTER'S AGENCY.]

LONDON, Jan. 99. The Prime Minister, Mr. Ramsay MacDonald, himself a keen airman, announced in the. House of Com mon, to-day, at question-time, that, although the Government is strong ly averse to perpstunting contests between rival Government teams, it is so interested in the Schneider Trophy thus it is prepared to au thorise its defence by the Royal Air Force and to grant provision-. at assistance as in 1929 provided a' slefinita undertaking is given mediately that the necessary funds will be available from private sources as to carry out the race in the proper way.

The Prime Minister, said that the deputation of the members of Par- hamint had assured him that the money required would be raised privately so this, no expense would fall upon the public funds.

He regretted the delay that had pccurred and recognised that it must be to the disadvantage of the British entry. The Government's recision had, however, beer reach

ed after careful consideration.

In the special circumstances-the trophy will be Britain's perinanent property if won again--they were prepared to assist.

Mr. Churchill adds that he will give, Mr. Baldwin the utmost assistance to secure the defeat of

the Socialist Government.

Mr. Baldwin Agrees.
