Dr. A. Y. Grioves, giving, evi- dence, stated that on November. 18) last he found the bodies of two Chinese babies in the Mortuary. These were numbered 3 and 4: No. 3, anid witness, was a few days old and No. 4 was newly-born.
A post-mortem on the body of the nówly-born infant showed that it died from asphyxia due to strangu-
strip of print cloth about one and a lation. The doctor discovered &
half inches wide and about fifteen inches long, securely tied round the infant's neck. The doctor added that he 'was satisfied that the child was not still-born, and said that in his opinion, the baby must have been dead 30 houre.
No Special Report.
.
This boby, said witness, was sent to the Mortuary from No. 7, Polica Station. Witness added that he made a report of his discovery to the C.J.D. through the ordinary routine and made no special report ́about it. In answer to a question by the Coroner, Dr. Grieves said. that he realised now þý should have made a special report of the strangulation to the C.I.D., but it did not occur to him at the time. In answer to another question by: the Coroner, witness said that the strip of cotton which was tied round the neck of the child had not beon preserved...
Witness explained that as a rule, a police officer was present at post-inortem examinations, and they generally took a note of all those facts, but on this particular pecasion there was no police officer present.
Regarding the routine of admit- ting dead bodies to the Mortuary, witness said that each body was accompanied by a police card, giv ing details of the case. He could not say whether these cards' were tied to the body in the past, but since November 15, he bad given definite instructions to the "Mor- tuary attendant not to admit a body unless the police card was properly tied on to the body.
In answer to a question by Mr. P. P. J. Wodehouse (A.S.P.), who that there were two attendants at was present in Court, witness srid the Mortuary. The body of the baby was admitted by the father of the No. 1 attendant, who was not a Government employer. The No. 1 attendant had obtained leave that funeral, but the No. 2 nttendant day to attend his mother-in-law's
