GİRL DEFIES A JUDGE.
REMÁRKABLE SCENE AT THE OLD BAILEY.
There was a remarkable scene at the Old Bailey when a fifteen-year old girl refused to take the oath when called to give evidence against Stephen Jennings, a costermonger, aged forty, who was accused of an offence against her.
The Recorder (Sir Ernest Wild, K.C) remarked sharply," Take the book in your hand and be sworn,"
The girl, who looked older than her years, shook her head.
Sir Ernest: I order you to take the book. You hear what I say - Yes.
Then take the book, and be sworn.—I am not going to say it. I have given evidence twice.
Sir Ernest: And you must do it again. You will either give evi- dence or go to prison, and there you. will remain.
Reported Missing.
The girl's mother was called and tried to reason with her, but he still declined to give evidence.
Eventually the girl was taken out of court by her mother and two women probation officers to see if she could be persuaded to alter her mind.
The girl was brought hack into court, and, on 'being asked by Sir Ernest if she was now willing to du as she was told, she replied em- phatically, "No, sir"

It is alleged that Schellking, from 1925 onwards, spent three years in Soviet Russin. But he refused in formation as to what he did there..

Mr. Seaton, for Jennings, haid that the girl might be described as a danger to society, aa any one she could get hold of ran groat peril of being charged with the offence Jennings was now ae. cused of.
E
Mr. Senton said that he under- slood the girl was wandering in the. alreets of Pennyfields, Limehouse, after midnight without any visible means of support when Jennings saw bor. She told him that her father and mother were dead, and- that she had come from Liverpool.
Refused to Leave.
Jennings took her into his house purely out of kindness, and the next morning she would not leave. She said she was twenty-one years of
nge.
A woman probation officer at Toynbee Hall juvonile court said that the girl had been charged with wandering without visible means of subsistence, and had been committed to a Staffordshire reformatory. She had only been kept back until the Prosent case was concluded,
Sir Ernest said that wore it not For the circumstances brought to his notice, if the girl preferred to ro main mute, he would have remand- ed her in custody until she did speak.
Jennings might well have thought the girl was two or three years older than she was, and he would be bound over for twelve months in the sum of £10.
Sir Ernest. remarked:
