taken action as "common informer's Edward Road, South Hackney, has

against a number of cinema coin- panies for breach of the law in opening their theatres on Sundays..

The sum claimed from Associated British Cinemas, in respect of the Regal, Marble Arch and other houses, is £30,000.

From the General Theatres Car- poration £25,000 is claimed; and against the Gaumont British Cor poration, whose theatres include the Tivoli, the New Gallery, the Capi- tol, the Marble Arch Pavilion and the Astoria, the claim is understood to be £10,000,

22 Years Old.

Miss Orton is a brown-haired girl of 22 years, who works in a scère- tarial capacity in the City.

She said: "I am really not pre- pared to give any information at this stage."

"Are your own personal views against the opening of cinemas on Sunday she was asked.

"I really cannot tell you," she replied. "My solicitors will say all that has to be said."

When it was suggested to her that the costs of the action would amount to a considerable sum and hat was unusual for a young girl to take such proceedings, she re- plied: "Well, we can only see how the action goes, but at the present inoment I am not prepared to say anything further."

Not Concerned,

Mr. H. H. Martin, secretary of the Lord's Day Observance Society, said that his organisation was not concerned, in any way with the issue of the writs in these cases, nor did they know anything of the "com- mon informer."

TEST MANAGER DEFENDS

HIS CONDUCT. -

Melbourne.-Anger characterised the retort made by Mr. W. L. Kelly, nager of the Australian Test team in England last summer, to statements concerning the conduct, of Don Bradman, the "boy" won der bateman.

Mr. Kelly is indignant about a book just published by Mr. Geoffrey Tebbutt, an Australian journalist who came over with the team and who is now

London.

The book, which tells the story from behind the wenes in the fight for the Ashes," deals in part with the personal relations between Bradman and his colleagues on the

tour.

"Not One of Us."

Mr. Tebbutt tells how Bradman, after his world's record score of 331. at Leeds, spent a night of triumph, not "basking in the sunshine of his team-mates" admiration," but "alone in his room playing the phonograph. "He is not one of

Es," said one of the Australians.

The author goes on to say: That did not worry Bradman. He was content to lead a life aloof, and Mr. Kelly lacked the firmness to take the situation in hand before it got beyond him.”·

Mr. Kelly said: "There was no breach between Bradman and the other playera Bradman did not lead a life aloof.

"He attended all ofcial func- tions and also many others, with ris teammatry.

Hero's n now use for a bowier hat. You can throw your voice. with it. This, according to no less an authority than Lóạ Chaney, who nssorts that one of the favourite tricks of a ventriloquist is to uke! the bowler as a sort of sounding board to push sound in a cartain direction. He does the trick in his role of ventriloquist in "The Un- holy Three," his first all-talking picture which opened on Thursday at the Queen's Theatre.

The acoustics of a bowler make it useful to hang over trombones in jazz orchestras for the saine reason, declares Chaney; and adds that' the dorby in such a case is gilded: to make it more ornamental rather than for musical reasons.

"How to be a "hero" though wicked'. That seems to be the secret of Robert Montgomery's success in motion pictures Instead of being a gallant hero, he always starts out as a villain, repents and wins the girl he first trifled with,

"I hate goody-goody heroca," the young film player said recently. "Peoplo write to me and tell me how they hated me in certain pio tures because of the mean way I

treated the heroine. That's music to my ears because I know I've played my rôle convincingly.
