TRIMMING THE V NECK,

THE PARTING..

HATS WITH VEILS. Whintover else may be done with the hair, no one can afford to-day to be without a parting. It must be a very distinct little parting right in the middle not at the side of the hair. Whether there is a coil or a bun or a curl at the back matters little. In any cree the downward slope of the hat at the back is likely to cover it. Bub the parting must be there, and it must show. Hats are actually cut out in a curve at the top in order to exhibit the parting to show that the owner is on the side of the angels, has the requisite look of deurenvas and austerity, and could new, never let herself go as might mere owners of shingles and plaits. About two inches of part- ing show in front, which is to say that the bat must be cut out very far indeed to show not only the whole forehead but a piece of the parting besides. The position is re- gulated by means of a cross between a veil and transparency in the

The circular.. effect is sometimes plain, but the scarf may also have a num ber of small tucks in the middle of one side which give it the neces aary curve. Some scarves are long,

reaching to well below the waist at the back. Some are very wide, and are arranged in a number of folds round the shoulders. Scarves oe casionally become fixed features of the dress, and only the ends at the back suggest their origin. Many of them are made of lace and chiffon, which may be mixod. Others aro made of velvet with a satin lining, which is sometimes white, where the velvet in black.
