South Africa and England opened in sunny weather before 1,000 spectators.

Tactics obviously pre-arranged to cope with the heavy conditions wen the rugger match between France and Ireland for the Frenchmen. They were the better of two moder- ate teams, and scored a try to nil.

The superior speed of the French- men had the heels of the Irishmen, except Lighterfoot. The Irish backs frittered away many chances by feeble handling. By kick-and-run tactics, the French always gained ground, and Ribere scored a well- deserved try 16 minutes after the interval from a pass from a scrüm.
