THE GENTLE ART OF WIRING
PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS IN SET BUILDING,
WELL SOLDERED JOINTS IMPROVE EFFICIENCY.
Tho solder, the flux and the wire must be considered. Perhaps the usp of flux had better he explained, sincs quite a few constructors try to solder without it! Flux is ro quired to dissolve the oxides pro- sent on the surface of the motal,
and to assist the solder to run freely into minute pores of the metal. These are several vory eff cient flux pastes on the market, under various proprietary names. Be sure you get a good-quality, flux since, this has a lot to do with the success of soldering..

Short and Long Wave Receiving Set
The solder, which is used to bind together the wires of the set, is also available in many varieties; for radio sets the blow-pipo, solder is best. It
possesses a low melting point and has the advantage of hardening quickly after the iron is removed from the joint. A con. venient way to buy wire is in 2t. straight lengths of No. 6 gauge, square or round, tinned-copper,"
In wiring up a set a good proce. dure to follow is roughly as fol lows First place the soldering iron on a lighted gästing or in the red-hot coal of a fire. Whilst wait- ing for the iron to heat up, all the soldering tags and other points of contact art, smeared lightly with fox. Care must be taken not to use too much flux. A match is handy for applying dux to the joints. The next part of the pro- cess often bothers constructors-08 they do not know when the iron is hot enough, or rather at the right temperature. One way of judging this is to see if a small green fiame is burning round the copper-bit. O no account let the iron get red-hot. Draw the iron from its source of heat and quickly clean the copper-bit with a le, then place the copper-bit in some flux; when ́t should sizzle if it is hot enough; withdraw it and apply some solder. If it is hot enough the solder will run on to the bit and form a bright surface.
The prepared tip of the iron, should now be rubbed lightly on cach of the soldering tags or points of contact; if they are clean the solder will immediately run and form small blobs. "At this point | always wipe away any excess of Aux. It is possible-that you may: experience a little difficulty in the process of tinning, but a little, practice soon makes easy what is really a simple operation.
A. Useful Tip.
Here is a good way of straighton. ing a piece of wire: Insert one and of the wire in a vice and firmly grip. the other end with long-nosed pliers. Exert a geatle pull on the wire uhitil you feel a slight "givĒ," you will then find the wire perfectly straight,
The shaping of the various wires involves fairly accurate guessing. If possible every bend should be s right angle. Decide upon the wire you intend to contect up and fix in your mind the directions you will have to take. Select a straight length of wire and hold it above. the first point of contact; mark of the distance this wire can make ja straight line. At some point it will be necessary, to bend the wire to avoid zone component; grip. the wire with long-nosed pliers and lift it clear of the set; then holding the pliers in the right hand bend the wire against the side of the jaws with the thumb of the left hand to; make a right angle.
Replace the wire in position, de- eide which way it must bend next, again bold with pliers, and repeat the bending process. Continue until the wire has completed its run and 1.then cut of the shaped portion from. the total, leaving about na-inch-to spare:

HAVE YOU HEARD THESE?
Here are lists of long-ware' and short wave stations which should be ploked up by anyone in Hong Kong who has a mode- rately good set muitable for re- ceiving such signals. Success in picking up these stations also depends very largely upon fav- ourable atmospheric conditions. Readers are invited to add to this list should they succeed in picking up any station not in cluded in either of these lists.
