FACTS AND FICTIONS ABOUT CANCER

NEED FOR EARLY TREATMENT.

WOMEN SLIGHTLY MORE LIABLE TO IT THAN MEN.

Fictions about cancer are exposed by the British Empire Cancer Campaign in a small book intended for the ordinary man and woman! The Truth About Cancer," which has been published by John Murray and is sold in England for 26. Bd.

The volume has been written and revised by a cominittee of experts, and represents the opinions of the greatest authorities on cancer. 'It is introduced by the Marquis, of Reading, and welcomed by the Duke of York.

Cancer is not increasing among women. There is reason to bo- lieve it in increasing among men, although in past years the statis. tics han boen swelled by better diagnosis and other causes.

The mortality among women has been almost stationary for some years.

Cancer is not incurable. It car often be treated successfully-if it is treated early and not left. This. is one of the most important points. Here are other destroyed fictions: IS CANCER HEREDITARY -Money talks, and many large life assur ance companies do not increase the premium where one of the proposer's parents has died of cancer. "So far as is known," it is said, "it may be dismissed from our minds without serious consequences,”

Gallstones, broken clay pipes; warte, moles, and other abnormal lamps in any part of the body, uleer or pimples that do not heal, undue exposure to X-rays or ultra-violet rays, prolonged ex- posure to tar petroleum, oils, arsenic and soot, are all possible causes of cancer.

Any chronic irritation of the. body predisposes to cancer and should be properly treated.

The point to be emphasised is that cancer must be treated without delay if the treatment is to succeed. The treatment may be by operation or radium,
