INNODENTS OF FARIS."

When Maurice Chevalier, soldier of France, and lion of the con tinental atage, camo marching into the silvershirt at the Central Theatre last night he gave his audience a big thrill, and kept them enthralled every moment that his spirited, voice-and body-were Le- fore them. For with Chevalier it is not along the animation of voonl tone, which "gols" people, young and small, but it is also that tem peramental language of the hands, the face, the feet.

In his current movie, "Innocents of Paris," at the Central Theatre, Chevalier plays the part of a happy-go-lucky push-cart singer of the Flea Market district of Paris.. He gets a chance to go on the stage with his songs and pantomime, and the plot affords him every oppor- tunity to present the gorgeaus. values of his full repertoire of songs, lyrics and ballads, which have established him in actual life as the reigning king of entertain, ment in Europe.

The picture is all-talking, and it - night he added, all-Chevalier,' but the work. of his, supporting cost is none the less adequate and pleas ing. Sylvia Beecher, a beautiful young actress recruited from the stage, is the purveyor of the love interest with 3, Chevalier..

སྨཱཉྙཱ ',

"CAPTAIN OF THE GUARD."

By far the most elaborate pro duction yet attempted, Universal's dramatic musical spectacle "Cap. tain of the Guard," coming to the Central Theatre on next change and starring Laura La Plante and John Boles, was made despite a multitude of difficulties which unavoidably. entered into such an ambitious undertaking further complicated by the necessity of reproducing on the talking screen the flaming drama of the French Revolution.

Great mobs of extras, forming the opposing armies of the Royalists guards and the Revolutionary. troops and numbering as many as 10,000 players at one time, had not only to be photographed against the background of vivid drama, but their battles, the crackle of their, muskets, the booming of thoir.can- non, their mighty sweep to victory singing the great song which had just been born to them-all and to be perfectly recorded in sound.

In the more intimate scenes, where Rouget sang the beautiful love songs especially written by Charles Wakefield Cadman and Rex Roehmeld to Marie, who later became the Torch"- to. load the revolutionists on, great care #48 taken to reproduce Boles' mongui- Bloent voice in absolute perfection. Particularly in the scene where he composes and at the same time sings, the Marseillaise itself.

Perhaps the most difficult sequence of the entire picture was that in which Miss La Plante, ns The Torch," is rescued from her dungeon by the mob who stojrms the arsenal. batters down the doors, and with lighted torches in their their hands bring her out on shoulders.
