Chairman's Address.

After expressing regret that His Excellency had been prevented from attending owing to indisposi tion and wishing Sir William a speedy recovery, the Chairman (Mr. Leung Pat U) dealt with the history of the Tang Wah Eastern Hospital, the idea of constructing which was conceived some years ago, and aleo for the continued need for assistance from the public in continuing the good work.

The Hon. Mr. E. R. Hallifax said-It is a matter of great regret that His Excellency is prevented by his unfortunato sccident from being present to open these new build ings to-day. The keen intercat of His Excellency and of Lady Peel in all matters connected with the Hospitals of this Colony is twel known to us all: and Sir William is not less disappointed than wétaro at his inability to be here, but he has instrusted me to read to you the speech he had himself prepared for this occasion, and Lady Peel has kindly consented to perform the opening ceremony."

Governor's Spanchialekte Mr. Leung Pal U Directors of the Tung Wah Hospital, Ladies and Gentlemen, It gives me the great- est pleasure to open to-day the new winge of the Tung Wah Eastern Hospital. The Tung Wah Hospital is one of the older institutions in Hong Kong, having been started in 1870 it is indeed older than most of us present here to-day. Its life- has been, and still in most useful in this Colony. I cannot do better perhaps than quote a paragraph in a recent report submitted to me by Dr. Wellington, the Director of Medical and Sanitary Services. (He said, "Tho Tung Wah has done, in immenso amount of good work, and has been of incalculable benefit to Hong Kong, both in the way oftre lief to tho-poor, ne a medium for propiranda““
