Merry and bright!

Mother says it's better to have a scamp to mind than a poorly child. You see Mother remembers the trouble she had with baby in the early days. He was always crying-couldn't digest his food. It was when they put him on "Laotogen" that Mother's worries were set at rest. He slept. Then there was a gain. And the next week showed another. Baby was on the right road at last..

INNOCENT DIVORCE

JUDGE

"KNEW NOTHING ABOUT.

MODERN HABITS.

It is understood that Mr. Justice Hill, who was absent at the reopen. ing of the London Courts after the long vacation is not likely to return to the bench of the Probate, Divorce and Admiralty Division,

Many of Mr. Justice Hill's judge ments in Divorce and Admiralty matters since his elevation to the hotch, thirteen years ago, have be; come historic.

He held very decided views about what, to him, was the impropriety of bringing proceedings for judicia separation where equally well the suit might have been a conclusive sult for divorce.

Mr. Justice Hill was called to the Bar in 1888, took silk in 1810, and seven years later became a Divorce and Admiralty judge, He was an authority on shipping, matters, in- dustrial, legal, and international, and his knowledge was invaluable on many international conventions.

Without Fuss.

Mr. Justice Hill had the reputa- tion for conducting bis court amoothly and without fuss. Nover too conventional, he was often the first to discard his wig in court on a hot day.

"The low which this court has to administer," he once said, a full of inconsistencies, and very often it is difficult to reconcile them with

Women's Stories..

Mr. Justice Hill's modulated voice often hypnotized a woman to tell him her story when she had been obstinate in the face of counsel. He could be very gallant, too, us when he made the comment :-

"It is sometimes said that the mere fact of a woman going off with another man. proves of itself that she is worthless Eut the law bas not gone quite to that extent, and it would not be true in the case we are hearing."

Some Sayings,

The following are some of Mr Justice Hill's saying:--

There are so many things in the divorce law which I should like to sce altered by Parliament, but I despair of Parliament evor doing anything."

It always asained by wit nesses that married people quarrel. It is a totally false assumption-if I may speak from my own experi ence and as far as I have observed from that of my friends."

The Courage of Cowardice. -

14,35

That it takes 'a vast amount of courage to be a consard in the opinion of the world is the main idea of Mary L. Pendered's "The Quaker," which was produced by Leverton Morris at the Royalty Theatre, London But, as › JOUKA Nathanael Harlock, a Quaker, kad his opponent, Captain Lashington, at his mercy in a duel, and then obviously refused to continue the fight because be was afraid of ki- ing him, it is difficult to see how anyone could have called him a coward. However, the Hon. Lae- |title Coverley's father did not long think so, and all are happy in the end. I could have wished this amiable and well-written play had given us rather more of the home life of Friends in the days of Wolfe's expedition to Quebec. -The atmosphers of calm commonESETZEN was the most interesting fenture of the little play, which was well acted And had been skilfully produced.
