Short Waves,

He also succeeded in producing

some very short waves of this type, 30cm (about 11 inches) in wave length, By placing a reflector be hind the oscillator, these short waves could be concentrated into a parallel beam, similar to a beam of light, which, exactly in accord- ance with Maxwell's prediction, travelled in straight line. He also showed that the resulting beam would not pass through metallic objects, but was reflected by them, but that it would pass through wood of stone, or other like substances, and that a metal object would throw a shadow," in which no electric action could be observed. He also refracted the waves, by causing them to pass through a prism made of pitch, and demon strated the fact that the waves were not true waves uctil they were one quarter wave length from the sourca of radiation.

"

It never occurred to Hertz to try and transmit signals by means of his apparatus, or to turn his dis- coveries into, a commercial success, He was apparently quite content to have proved the existence of elec- tro-magnetic waves experimentally. He, however, opened the door. for others to come and make prac-- tical successes of the scientific truth he demonstrated.

When copying a net design take notice of such points as the rela tive positions of the valve bolders and which way the grid and plate sockets face, as these make a great difference to the efficiency of the wiring.

On simple sets troubled with interference a bank of wire of fifteen turns or so tied to the grid coil with cotton, joined to earth at one end and to the aorial lend at the other, often gives suficient selectivity.

When soldering remember that as little fluxite as possible, consistent with a good joint, should be used, and as soon as this joint is made, and while the mactal. ja hot, the superfluous fluxita should be wiped

One of the simplest ways of pre- serving the life of your power valve is to remember that never under any circumstances should the grid- bias plugs be readjusted unless the set in switched off frat.
