ST. ANDREW'S BALL AT THE PENINSULA HOTEL.
"FAR. FAR FROM SCOTLAND OF THE MIST AND STORM".
GREETINGS FRAE BRITHER SCOTS.
All Hong Kong looks forward to St. Andrew's Ball, that first important function of our social year, and never are we disappoint- ed. Last night's brilliant affair in the Peninsula Hotel added one more delightful memory to the store of those treasured re collections which we all-men and womon alike-take out and ponder over as the years pass.
We are all, whatever our national allegiance, proud of the country from which we hail, but no one is prouder than the Scot, and wherever ho goes he takes something of his dear familiar land" with him, It was not only the shields, the tartans, the thistles, and tho pipes, that mado last night featṭish, but the whole. atmosphoro of genuine brotherliness, good fellowship and cordial Hospitality. We all of us-the Scots themselves no less than other people-enjoy jokes about the mythical Abordoniàn, but the gueste of St. Androw's Society know the truth-that one will not find a hetter host the world over than the patron saint of bonny Scot Jood.
GREETINGS BY WIRE,
From the lone shieling on the misty island Mountains divide us and a waste of stas,
But still the blood is strong, the heart is Highland, And we în dreme behold the 'Hebridu,
The usual long list of greetings from "Brither Scota" in all parts of the world were posted on the notice board and were read with interest by most of the guests.
His. Excellency Sir William Peel and Lady Peel were the guests of honour and were formally received by the Chieftain (Mr. T. H. R. Show) outside the ball room: Supper was served in the hotel dining room, the Chieftain's party being accommodated at a long table behind which hung the shield of St. Andrew's Society. His Excellency took in Mrs. Shaw, while Lady Paul entor- ed on the arm of the Chieftain.
