WHO WILL WIN TO-DAY'S BIG RACE?

ST. ANDREW'S STAKES AN OPEN EVENT: SEVERAL CONTENDERS OF MERIT AMONG LIKELY STARTERS.

SOME POINTS ABOUT TO-DAY'S RACING PROGRAMME.

[By "MORNING DEW."} .!

The outstanding event to-day is the St. Andrew's Stakes over the mile and a half. Several big stables are represented by good candidates and a very keen race should be seen. To pick the winner is a very difficult task as there are several optranta of... about equal strength. On paper it looks as if Nationalist 11., President Hall or Sitting Bull will supply the anawer, although, it would not be surprising if either Wisdom Stag, Peppermint or King's Colour did the trick. The chances of the favourites are fully discussed below.

Besides the main event, the "A" class race over the milo should provide a contest worth going a long way to sco. The ox- Champion, Elliot Bay, is entered and will be running against that great short distanco performer of the past, Boxing Eve. Royal Flush is hero also running at a comfortablo weight as is Chess- peake Bay, Majestic Hall and Duke of Chantilly. Here also puuters are referred to the more detailed notes below.

TRICKY WEIGHTS MAY UPSET FAVOURITES.

The handicap events provide mach speculation as to the relative chances of the entrants. The "C"

St. Andrew's Stakes.

In this race the field will be the best seen on the local course for a long time. The likely starters and their jockey are Nationalist II. (Mr. da Roza), President Hall (Mr. Pan), Bull (Mr. Heard), Wisdom

Harriman).

Boxing Eve. This candidate looks the best for, a win. He can hump - big lond, but will be starting to-day with only 153 pounds on the saddle. He is quick with the start, gets into strido easily and a mile is not too long for him.

President Hall.-A good stayer. Has done the mile and half under 2.08 at the beginning of the year, but has since been out of condition. He has now fully recovered and is perfectly sound. Training perform- ances in the morning are encourag- ing. Will bo ridden by Mr. Pan. Both jockey and pony are depend- able,

Elliot Bay. Still a good per former in spite of the fact that he bas done no actual racing for some time. He is an ex-champion who has covered the mile and a quarter ia 9 minutes 39 seconds, so, if he did a mile in 2 minutea, it would not surprise anyone. He is fight ing fit but the long interval that has poor condition at the Annual Meet- clapsed since bis Inst outing ising and was behind President Hall against him.

Royal Flush-If you have been at be last "extra" meeting you will anderstand how this pony laughs at 100 pounds.

The field is likely to be quite big. Lanark Handicap First Division,

The Tigor has only 101 pounds and should win. He ran beautifully at the lark mooling and there is every reason to believe that he will repent his fine performance to-day.,

Little Thunder with Mr. Pun in the saddle is full of beans "at the moment and in sure to give a good account of himself.

Peppercorn with 157 pounds does not look like a winner, but he cor tainly will be "somewhere there" at the end of the race.
